FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast softball (5-9) rallied, but came up just short, falling 4-3 to UConn (3-10) in the tenth game of The Hampton Inn Gulf Coast Classic on Saturday night.
The Eagles left five runners on base in the last two innings, including leaving the bases loaded in the seventh with the tying run 60 feet away, in their comeback bid. In total, the Eagles stranded 11 runners in the loss.
FGCU was unable to overcome a pair of solo home runs hit by UConn's Cat Petteys. Petteys went 3-for-3 with the two home runs, a single and a walk; she scored three of the Huskies four runs to lead them to the win..
Olivia Black led the way at the plate for the Eagles. She went 3-for-4, had an RBI and scored a run.
Mackenzie Leiti also had a multi-hit day for FGCU, going 2-for-4.
Julia Bacoulis recorded her first career extra base hit to add to her milestone list (first hit and first RBI) in her first weekend in the batting order.
Next, the Eagles hit the road for the first time in 2026, traveling north for Florida State's Unconquered Invitational on February 27-28.
