Eagles finish 5th, place a pair in top 10 at Seminole Intercollegiate

The Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf team finished 5th at the Seminole Intercollegiate hosted by Florida State University, with the first pair of rounds contested on Monday and the third on Tuesday. As a team, FGCU shot -3 (837). Two Eagles, Brett Moore and Nolan Harper, placed in the top 10 of the individual standings. Moore shot -6 (204) to finish tied for third, while Harper found himself in a tie for 8th place with a -3 (207).

The Eagles ended the first round in fifth place in the team standings among the 15 squads competing, headlined by No. 15 Florida State. FGCU was +4 in the opening round, slotting in behind the Seminoles, Troy, North Alabama and Stetson.

Moore led the way for FGCU, shooting -1 (69) to tie for 8th in the 81-player field through 18 holes. The freshman, a former top 10 recruit in the state of Florida, was the only Eagle below par in the first round. FGCU's Tom Scullion and Christian Figueredo found themselves in a tie for 18th place at even par.

Moore got even better on Monday afternoon in the second round, shooting -4 (66) to bring him into a tie for third place in the individual standings at -5 (135) overall. The freshman converted 10 birdies across the first two rounds, tied for second best among all competitors. Seven of those 10 came in the second round.

Harper matched his teammate with a -4 (66) in the second round. Harper, who, like Moore, is a freshman and former top 10 recruit out of Florida, broke into the top 10 overall through a pair of rounds at -2 (138) overall.
In the team standings, FGCU remained in 5th place after 36 holes, shooting +1 (561). The Eagles still trailed Florida State, Troy and North Alabama. FGCU jumped Stetson but was overtaken by Augusta University. The Eagles were particularly effective on par threes, shooting +2 which ranked second in the field, trailing just Florida State.

The Eagles saved their best for the third round, shooting -4 (276) as a team-tied for the second-best mark of the day with Augusta and behind only FSU. Moore and Harper both shot -1 (69) to cement themselves in the top 10 of the individual standings. FGCU was led by Sebastian Gamboa Tuesday, who paced the Eagles with a -2 (68).

FGCU finished just three strokes behind Augusta and North Alabama who tied for third place in the team standings. Florida State was triumphant at its home event, with Troy finishing as runner-up.

In addition to Moore's -6 (204) and Harper's -3 (207), Gamboa finished at +3 (213), Scullion shot +7 (217) and Figueredo ended with a score of +9 (219).

FGCU finished the event at +2 on par threes, holding second place in that department behind FSU. The Eagles also converted 48 birdies, the third most among the 15 squads competing, trailing just the Seminoles and North Alabama. Moore shone in both categories individually, shooting -4 on par threes, the best mark of any competitor. The freshman also tied for second in the field with 15 birdies.

The Eagles are back in action next week when they contest the Johnnie-O at Sea Island hosted by Rutgers University on March 17 and 18.
