FORT MYERS, Fla. –
Kendall Wylie hit her first collegiate home run in a 9-0 run-rule victory against LIU on Saturday as Florida Gulf Coast University softball split their two games on the day.
"To see [Kendall] Wylie walk us off for her first college home run and first as an Eagle was remarkable," FGCU head coach
David Deiros said. "We fought well against LIU and welcome the opportunity to bounce back against BU tomorrow."
The day started at 2:30 p.m. against the Sharks of LIU. The scoring started early when
Avery Viancos drove in
Tiffany Meek in the first inning.
Meek started a three-run third inning with a single to bring home
Maria Angelino. With Meek on second, a double steal and wild throw allowed Meek to score from second.
Nikki Gibson tripled home
Ana Richiez to cap off the inning for a 4-0 win.
Heading into the bottom of the fifth up four, doubling the FGCU run total would lead to a walk-off. The scoring started with another double steal, this time by Gibson and Meek for the first run of the inning.
Maddox Thomas laced a ball just over the leaping shortstop to bring home two more for a 7-0 lead.
MCkenzie Cox came in to pinch run for Thomas but a trot was all that was necessary as Wylie belted a ball over the 220 sign in dead center for the walk-off 9-0 win.
The Eagles had a break between games and came back out to face the Boston University Terriers, who are receiving votes in both major polls.
BU had Kasey Ricard in the circle, the #26 ranked player in the country and number nine pitcher by D1Softball. FGCU could not scrape out a run across against Ricard.
The Terriers would eventually win the game off a five-run sixth inning for the 8-0 run rule victory.
The Eagles and Terriers will face each other again on Sunday. Scheduled first pitch is at 12:30 p.m.
