Florida Gulf Coast University women's soccer secured a 2-0 victory Sunday at Jacksonville to start 2-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference play from Jacksonville, Florida.
"Great result on the road," head coach Jim Blankenship said. "Getting the full six points is always a weekend hope. Olivia and her goalkeeping, especially the PK save, was the difference."
The preseason favorite Eagles have started 2-0 in conference for the second straight year and defeated Jacksonville for the third consecutive season. Kendal Gargiula and Ashley Labbe provided a goal Sunday to lift FGCU past the in-state Dolphins.
Gargiula recorded her first goal of the season in the 12th minute. She placed a perfect ball on the ground toward the far post that snuck past the keeper, giving FGCU a 1-0 lead. Lou Martinet and Maya Henley Buisan were credited with the assist on the play.
The FGCU defense made its presence known early. The Eagles did not surrender a shot on goal in the first half as FGCU took its one-goal advantage into halftime.
The Dolphins came out swinging in the second half, outshooting FGCU 10-3. Jacksonville drew a penalty kick in the 57th minute, but Olivia Molina would come up with a huge save.
In the 78th minute, Molina made a full extension save to further keep the Dolphins off the board. Molina, the ASUN Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, recorded seven saves in the second half to preserve the shutout, her third consecutive clean sheet of the season. Molina has not allowed a goal in her last 324 minutes between the pipes against App State, Florida, North Florida and now Jacksonville.
Labbe provided the final blow in the 83rd minute with her scoring strike, her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
FGCU continues its three-match road swing Thursday at Eastern Kentucky. Kickoff in the Bluegrass State is set for 4 p.m.
