Final homestand opens with key contest for FGCU

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast University will look for a measure of revenge Thursday night in Alico Arena as Kennesaw State University visits for a key Atlantic Sun Conference contest. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in a game that will be available via ESPN+.

The Eagles (11-16, 5-7 ASUN) are coming off a tough, 61-60, loss to Stetson University last Saturday. The Eagles had two chances to win in the final 10 seconds, but both shots went off the back iron. The loss was FGCU's fourth by three points or less in ASUN play this season.

The first of those four losses came in the season's first meeting with Kennesaw State. The Eagles led 75-72 entering the final 15 seconds of the game, but a foul on a three-point opportunity allowed the Owls to tie the game from the charity stripe. FGCU would then turn the ball over and KSU would hit a 3-pointer from the corner as time expired to earn a 78-75 win.

Since that game, fortunes have turned south for Kennesaw State. The defending ASUN tournament champions, KSU was 12-5 overall and 3-0 in conference play after the win over FGCU Jan. 12 in Kennesaw. Since then, the Owls have gone 2-8 over their last 10 games to sit at 5-8 in conference play, one-half game behind the Eagles in the league standings.

The Eagles currently sit in seventh in the league standings, ahead of a three-way tie that includes KSU for eighth place. Jacksonville, with a record of 4-9, is currently on the outside of the ASUN Tournament bubble looking in, one game out of a transfer spot as only the top 10 schools will qualify.

Thursday night's game is also a "Red Out" at Alico Arena to raise awareness for heart disease and support for the American Heart Association.
