FORT MYERS, Fla. - Winners of three of their last four contests, Florida Gulf Coast University's men's basketball team will take on another tough non-conference test Wednesday night in Alico Arena as the Eagles take on Furman University. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. with tickets available at the box office or via
FGCUTickets.com.
The Eagles (3-5) have won two games in a row that came down to the last possession. In their last home game against FIU Nov. 24, the Eagles defeated FIU 60-59 after
Michael Duax hit the go-ahead free-throw and the Panthers missed a game-winning attempt just before the buzzer. Against FAU last Saturday in Boca Raton, FGCU won 80-78 when
Jevin Muniz sank a fadeaway jumper at the buzzer.
The shot by Muniz is part of a string of solid games for the junior transfer. The Bethlehem, Pennsylvania native has averaged 10.5 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game over his last four contests, with a high of 16 points against FAU. Muniz has increased his averages to 9.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game with his last four efforts.
FGCU also improved to 2-0 without
Keeshawn Kellman starting lineup. The sixth-year forward missed the previous two games for FGCU, but the play of the team has given FGCU head coach
Pat Chambers optimism for the rest of the season. "We've done this without Keeshawn," said Chambers after the FAU win. "We should all be excited about that. We've got a really good group of guys that are coming together to play good basketball. This is only going to make us better when Keeshawn is back in the lineup."
Furman is 7-1 on the season, with its only loss coming to No. 1-ranked Kansas last Saturday at the Vegas Showdown. Two of Furman's wins have come against non-Division I opponents, but the Paladins are still a formidable opponent. Furman went 17-16 last year, falling in the semifinals of the Southern Conference tournament.
This is the second game for FGCU as part of the Atlantic Sun Conference's scheduling agreement with the SoCon. FGCU's first game was against UNC Greensboro in the season opener on the road.
Following Wednesday's game, the Eagles will be on the road to take on LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana this Sunday. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. on SEC Network+.
