FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University's volleyball team defeated Bellarmine University Saturday and earned its 10th sweep of the season. The Eagles continue to lead the Atlantic Sun Conference with a 13-1 record.
"We continue to do a nice job on the defensive side of the ball and our serving tonight was excellent," head coach
Matt Botsford said. "We know we will have to play a more well-rounded game as we head into the final week of regular season play."
In the first set, Bellarmine (6-18, 3-11 ASUN) was narrowly leading 8-7 before the Eagles (22-4, 13-1 ASUN) took full control with a 14-8 run to take a 21-15 advantage. From there, the Knights could only muster up two more points as the Eagles stormed away with a 25-17 victory.
FGCU came out swinging in the second set with an 10-3 advantage. Bellarmine responded with an 8-3 rally to close the gap to 13-11. FGCU regrouped and outpaced the Knights to a 20-15 advantage before putting the set away with a 5-2 run to win 25-17.
The Green & Blue cruised to a comfortable 17-12 advantage in the final set and just kept applying offensive pressure while using the Knights' errors to propel them to a 25-20 victory.
The Eagles dominated the service line 8-3.
Shelby Kent had a match-high 11 kills with three aces, while
Skylar English registered 10 kills and a pair of aces.
The Eagles will remain home and battle North Florida Thursday for a 6 p.m. match.
