Eagles close out regular season with Senior Night sweep of Jacksonville

FORT MYERS, Fla - Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball honored its 2024 senior class Saturday before earning a 3-0 win against Jacksonville. Shelby Kent, Claire Ertel, Destiny Nelson, Barbara Koehler, Megan Harris and Sasha Van Der Merwe were all thanked for their contributions to the Green & Blue.

FGCU finished the regular season with a 24-4 record while boasting a 15-1 mark in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Eagles won the league's regular season title Thursday for the eighth time in program history, sweeping North Florida.

The Eagles earned the No.1 seed for the upcoming ASUN Championship and will battle against Queens University of Charlotte on Thursday in the quarterfinals at Alico Arena.

"That was a great way to cap off a really successful regular season in front of our home crowd," said head coach Matt Botsford. "Tonight was made even more special as we celebrated our six seniors who have given so much to FGCU volleyball. I am so proud of each of them and look forward to watching them compete next week in the conference tournament."

In the first set, FGCU gradually gained a 20-13 lead off five points from Kent, and the Dolphins had no response as Koehler fired off three of the Eagle's next five points to seal a 25-17 victory.

In set two, the Green & Blue jumped out with a 7-1 advantage, but JU answered with a 16-11 run to close the gap to just one,18-17. FGCU remained composed and outscored the Dolphins 7-2 to win 25-19.

The last set started intense and remained that way even past the halfway point, with both teams deadlocked at 18-18. FGCU's offense took flight and the Eagles earned a 24-20 lead just before Koehler released a vicious kill to seal the match.

Kent had 13 kills and two aces, while English registered 12 kills and also had a pair of aces.
