Shelby Kent registered an impressive double-double with 22 kills and 22 digs to help Florida Gulf Coast University's volleyball team push its winning streak to six after defeating the University of West Georgia 3-1 Friday in Carrollton, Georgia in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
The Eagles are still the only team in the league that has clinched an ASUN Championship berth.
"We had some challenges in that second set with our sideout game but outside of that, we played very clean," head coach
Matt Botsford said. "I thought our block and floor defense was great and our middles definitely led the charge there.
Oreva Evivie had a phenomenal match and seems to be finding a nice groove with her attacking."
The first set started tied 7-7 before the Eagles (19-4, 11-1 ASUN) jumped out to a 20-13 advantage. The Wolves (9-14, 2-9 ASUN) could not find an answer and the Green & Blue easily closed out the set, winning 25-16.
In set two, West Georgia gained a 16-12 lead and the Eagles tried rallying back with a mini 5-2 run to trail just by one 18-17. The Wolves remained in control and ran away with a 25-22 victory.
The Eagles were determined to get back on track in set three and earned a 5-0 advantage before unleashing a 16-6 rally featuring three kills each from
Barbara Koehler and Kent to lead 21-6. The Wolves home crowd stood in silence as the Eagles finished the set to seal a 25-8 victory.
Set four would be no different as the Eagles jumped out a 17-8 lead with a whopping five kills from Kent. The Green & Blue continued soaring and Kent answered the call again, this time with four kills down the stretch as the FGCU easily got to 25-14.
FGCU held the Wolves to a .000 attacking percent in the first set and a -0.114 percent in the third set. The Eagles had 54 assists to West Georgia's 29 and dominated in blocks, 13-8.
English registered 15 kills and eight digs, while both
Raegan Richardson and
Shanelle Puetz delivered 23 assists each.
FGCU will now head to Charlotte, North Carolina to take on Queens University of Charlotte Sunday at 1 p.m.
