FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University women's soccer won its third-straight match Sunday in convincing fashion, 5-0 over West Georgia at a rain-soaked Pickering Field.
"Great result today considering the elements," head coach Jim Blankenship said. "Enjoyed some great goals and was able to keep a clean sheet in the back."
FGCU has outscored its opponents 13-0 in its last two matches, the most goals scored in back-to-back contests in program history. The Eagles drilled Queens on Friday 8-0 and turned around a five-goal performance against the Wolves in the first-ever meeting Sunday.
Nellie Nygren scored twice and Erika Zschuppe, Courtney Corcoran, and Taylor Thomas scored once. The Eagles had multiple opportunities to score early as Zschuppe finally got the Eagles on the board in the 26th minute with her fourth goal of the season.
FGCU took a 1-0 lead into the break before opening up with four second-half goals. West Georgia gifted FGCU a 2-0 lead as a defensive header bounced the right way for the Eagles, courtesy of Corcoran's deep crossing attempt in the 57th minute.
Two minutes later, Thomas showed off her leg with a powerful upper 90 strike toward the far post, giving FGCU a 3-0 advantage with her first career goal. Nygren scored her first-ever goals in 64th and 87th minutes, both rebound goals following loose ball saves in the six-yard box.
The Green and Blue peppered 27 shots against the Wolves' keeper Sunday and allowed just two West Georgia shot attempts in return. FGCU recorded a whopping 60 shot attempts over the weekend.
Goalkeeper Olivia Molina picked up another two saves to reach 72 for the year. Clara Karlsson combined for the clean sheet Sunday, playing a scoreless 11 minutes between the pipes in relief.
FGCU improved north of .500 in its overall record (6-5-1) and now sits 5-1 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Eagles hit the road to battle Lipscomb Thursday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. on ESPN+.
