Eagles soar over UNF for fifth ASUN sweep this year

Shelby Kent and Skylar English each had a match-high 17 kills as Florida Gulf Coast University's volleyball team earned its fifth-straight win after a 3-0 sweep of North Florida Saturday evening in Jacksonville, Florida in Atlantic Sun Conference play.

"I was really happy overall with the team's performance this weekend, Skylar and Shelby continue to play at a very high level and we soared again tonight," FGCU head coach Matt Botsford said. "Shanelle and Raegan did an excellent job running the offense as evident by the attacking numbers and especially our efficiencies"

The first set began tied 7-7 before the Ospreys (4-14, 1-3 ASUN) earned an 11-8 advantage. The Eagles (13-3, 5-0 ASUN) responded with a 9-5 run to take the lead to 19-16 and never looked back, scoring six points to UNF's three to win the set 25-19.

In set two, both teams were tied 5-5 before the Eagles got settled in and unleashed a 15-7 rally featuring three kills each from Kent and English to lead 20-12. UNF would pull within four, 22-18, but the Green & Blue responded with three straight points to take the set 25-18 and lead the match 2-0.

The Eagles picked up an early 10-5 advantage in set three and kept applying pressure to get to 20-14 featuring five points from English.  The Ospreys then had a 3-0 spurt to get to 22-17 but the Eagles wrapped up the set and won 25-20.

Shanelle Puetz had 26 assists to lead all players. The Eagles had 50 kills as a team compared to UNF's 34 and won the service line battle in aces, 10-4.

The Eagles have now won 15 consecutive sets in ASUN play to start the conference slate. The win for FGCU was also the 34th in the all-time series with UNF.

The Eagles will be back on the court Friday at 2 p.m. as they take on EKU in Richmond, Kentucky in ASUN action.
