Eagles sweep Stetson for Botsford's 250th win

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Head coach Matt Botsford earned his 250th win as head coach of Florida Gulf Coast University's volleyball team as the Eagles swept Stetson Tuesday night in Alico Arena.

"That was a nice turnaround after a tough road trip. We had some nice performances out there that helped steady the offense. Barbara did a nice job, scoring for us and Skylar had an exceptional match,"  Botsford said. "I thought Claire provided exactly what we needed in both serve receive and defense and she did a great job making her presence felt."

In the first set, the Eagles (14-4, 6-1 ASUN) got to work early with an 11-5 advantage, featuring four points from Shelby Kent. The Green & Blue kept pushing forward, gaining a 23-16 lead and finished the set with a 25-18 victory.

In set two, Stetson (3-15, 0-7 ASUN) got to 18-16 before the Eagles answered with a 5-2 run to take their first lead of the set 22-21. The Hatters did not go away that easily and scored three straight points to secure set point.

FGCU held strong and rallied back to tie the frame 24-24 and from there, the crowd would endure five one-point lead changes until the Eagles pulled away, winning 31-19.

The Green & Blue meant business in set three gaining a 13-6 lead before releasing a 12-8 rally off a pair of kills from Skylar English, Ella Chapman, Barbara Koehler and Kent to win 25-14 and secure the 3-0 sweep.

English evened her career high with 18 kills and Shanelle Puetz registered 24 assists.

The Eagles remain home Friday at 6 p.m. to host North Alabama (10-9, 4-2 ASUN) Tickets are available by clicking here.
