Women's soccer upended by App State, 3-0

BOONE, N.C. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women's soccer team stumbled in the High Country Sunday, falling 3-0 at Appalachian State University.

The Eagles (2-2-1) struggled to set up opportunities to combat the Mountaineers' constant pressure. FGCU recorded a season-low three shots.

"Disappointed with the result, but credit to App State who got better as the game went on," head coach Jim Blankenship said. "We will turn on the tape and work harder to get better."

App State (3-1-1) sneaked an early goal past freshman goalkeeper Olivia Molina. Molina charged out, guessed the near post, and App State found daylight toward the far post. Just 14 minutes into the match, the Eagles stared down a 1-0 deficit.

The Mountaineers fired their second scoring strike of the day at the 35:51 mark courtesy of a loose ball in the 18-yard box, further stunning the Eagles.

FGCU trailed 2-0 heading into the break. Sunday marked just the second time all season that the Eagles trailed at halftime.

Eyeing to chip away at the Mountaineers' lead, the Green & Blue recorded two of its three shots in the second half. Sophomore and ASUN Player of the Week Erika Zschuppe led all Eagles with two, while junior Katelyn Kauffman added a shot attempt.

App State effectively put the Eagles away with an insurance goal in the 82nd minute. The Mountaineers outpaced FGCU in total shots 20-3.

FGCU forced four corners on the day, but none of its set pieces found the back of the net.

The Eagles return to the Sunshine State Thursday, Sept. 7, to battle in-state foe Florida Atlantic University. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
