Eagles drop heartbreaker at Central Arkansas, 2-1

CONWAY, Ark. – Florida Gulf Coast University women's soccer dropped a heartbreaking match Thursday at Central Arkansas 2-1, surrendering a goal in the final minute of play.

"The game can humble you as it did tonight," head coach Jim Blankenship said. "Thought we played well enough to get a better result, but learned an important lesson that will help us as we continue to grow."

Thursday's loss snapped FGCU's (5-4-1, 2-1 ASUN) three-match win streak, and marked Central Arkansas (4-5-2, 3-0 ASUN) first-ever win over the Eagles.

With time expiring, Central Arkansas' Anna Kerr chased down a midfield ball sent toward the 18-yard box. Freshman goalkeeper Olivia Molina charged out, lost the race to the ball and Kerr connected on a perfect flick over Molina to win the match for the Bears.

FGCU forced a scoreless tie heading into the break.

UCA broke through in the 47th minute, capitalizing on another defensive miscue by the Eagles. UCA's first goal of the night was the first goal that FGCU surrendered in three contests.

The Green & Blue responded in the 66th minute off a free-kick set piece to tie the game, 1-1. Courtney Corcoran fed Erika Zschuppe, who snuck the ball through to Kendal Gargiula on the backside of the goal. Gargiula then redirected the equalizer to send the Eagles into a frenzy, her fifth goal of the season.

FGCU was 33 seconds away from earning a hard-fought point.

The Eagles produced 16 shot attempts, four on goal and three corner opportunities. Katelyn Kauffman fired a team-leading four shots. Defensively, FGCU allowed only seven shots.

UCA's two shots on goal both found the back of the net.

FGCU continues its ASUN road swing Sunday to take on North Alabama. Kickoff is scheduled for noon (ET).
