FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team (33-11 overall, 16-5 ASUN) faces arguably its stiffest conference test of the 2023 season starting Friday when the Stetson Hatters visit Swanson Stadium for a critical three-game series.

First pitch Friday is set for 6:30 p.m., with Saturday set for 2 p.m. and Sunday scheduled for 1 p.m. All three games in the series will be streamed on ESPN+.

The Eagles hold a one-game lead atop the ASUN, just ahead of the Hatters (27-18, 15-6) and Lipscomb in second place. FGCU holds a 28-23 all-time series lead over Stetson, has won six straight, and is 12-10 against its in-state foes at Swanson Stadium.

Stetson has won six of its last seven games, including series sweeps at Central Arkansas and at home against Liberty. The Hatters dropped a 13-6 home decision Tuesday against South Florida – a team FGCU swept this season.

Stetson is hitting just .261 as a team, which ranks 11th in the ASUN and 64 points behind FGCU. The Hatters have two hitters above .300, led by Landon Moran at .329. Christian Pregent has hit a team-best nine home runs, and Pregent and David Bermudez have each driven in 37 runs. Stetson's pitching staff leads the ASUN with 432 strikeouts, and is tied with Liberty and Kennesaw State in allowing opposing hitters just 41 home runs.

FGCU has assembled one of the hottest offenses in college baseball this season. The Eagles lead the nation in five different categories – home runs (106), homers per game (2.41), runs (448), scoring (10.2 runs per game), and slugging percentage (.600). The Green & Blue also rank second nationally in hit by pitch (104), third in on-base percentage (.443), fourth in hits (510), sixth in batting average (.325), and ninth in winning percentage (.750).

Junior infielder Edrick Felix (Orlando, Fla./Victory Charter HS/College of Central Florida) is second in the country in total bases (153), fifth in runs (59), sixth in home runs (20), sixth in doubles (20), and seventh in slugging percentage (.850). Junior infielder/pitcher Jacob Lojewski (West Palm Beach, Fla./Delray American Heritage HS) is also sixth in the country in hit by pitch (20) and 10th in hit by pitch per game (0.45).

Seven players are hitting at least .300, led by Felix at .394, and five players have hit at least 10 home runs, led by Felix at 20. Lojewski has swatted 16 homers, and both senior infielder Alejandro Figueredo (Sucre, Venezuela/West Oaks HS/Seminole State) and senior designated hitter Joe Kinker (North Port, Fla./Venice HS) each have belted 14 homers. Kinker set the school's career home run record earlier this season, and currently has 56 career homers.

The Eagles are the only program in the country with over 100 doubles and 100 home runs, having belted 103 doubles through 44 games. FGCU's 106 homers this season has already smashed more homers than in any other single season in program history.

FGCU expects to start senior right-hander Nick Love (Fernandina Beach, Fla./Yulee HS/Central College of Florida/Jacksonville) Friday night, opposite Stetson's Austin Amaral.

Additionally, in just 11-plus seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 48 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. In 2022, the men's golf team became the first program to earn an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. Nine FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including women's basketball (No. 20 in 2021-22 and No. 22 in 2022-23), baseball (No. 15 in 2023), beach volleyball (No. 20 in 2022), and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as five of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green & Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.67 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2022 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 27 consecutive semesters. The past seven semesters (Fall 2019-Fall 2022) saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher cumulative team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
