Eagles soar past Gardner-Webb, 102-53

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Five Eagles reached double figures Thursday as Florida Gulf Coast University women's basketball soared past Gardner-Webb 102-53 at Alico Arena.

"We played well tonight," head coach Karl Smesko said. "It was nice to see Ashley and Emani get into their first game at FGCU. They both played well. Uju and Ajulu also had good games."

Emani Jefferson dressed out for the first time this season and led all Eagles in points with 18. Ashley Baez also made her first appearance for the Green & Blue, dropping 15 points in just 13 minutes.

Uju Ezeudu provided 15, Ajulu Thatha supplied 11 and Sofia Persson added 10 points to round out the five Eagles that reached double figures Thursday.

FGCU (7-3) eclipsed the century mark for the second time this season. Baez drained the Eagles' 10th 3-pointer of the night in the waning seconds to lift FGCU to 102 points and its 49-point victory. FGCU also shot a season high 41.7 percent from deep as seven different Eagles connected from behind-the-arc.

FGCU extended its home winning streak to 18 games. The Eagles possess the sixth-longest home winning streak in the nation.

The Green & Blue scored the first 16 points of the contest and led the Runnin' Bulldogs 23-5 after one. FGCU secured a 32-point advantage heading into halftime, 49-17, and continued to build upon its lead in the third and fourth quarters, finishing the game on a 11-0 run.

FGCU hits the road Sunday to face Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Tip-off on ACC Network is scheduled for noon.
