FORT MYERS, Fla. - Three players scored a dozen points for Florida Gulf Coast University, but the Eagles dropped a 71-55 decision to UNC-Wilmington at Alico Arena in men's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
"We knew going in that our schedule was going to be difficult," said FGCU head coach
Pat Chambers. "We just have to stay the course and use every game as an opportunity to keep getting better to prepare for conference play."
Chase Johnston scored 12 points for the Eagles, with
Zach Anderson adding 12 and
Isaiah Thompson netting the same amount from the bench.
FGCU (1-6) turned up the defensive pressure early, keeping the contest a low-scoring affair over the first five minutes. After a fast-break 3-pointer by UNCW gave the guests a 7-4 lead, the Seahawks (5-1) would never trail again. UNCW held a 12-point lead at halfitme and never let the lead slip under double-digits the rest of the way.
Keeshawn Kellman had a game-best nine rebounds and two blocked shots.
FGCU will be back in action Wednesday when it travels across Alligator Alley to face Florida International University in Miami, Fla. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m.
