Freshman Jasmin Kroll set two meet records at the Magnus Cup Thursday to highlight a strong day-one performance by FGCU swimming and diving in Cleveland, Ohio.
Kroll's gold medal swims broke the meet record in both the 50 and 500-yard freestyle events. Her 4:50.64 mark in the 500 free emerged as the fifth fastest time in program history, and her 22.61 effort in the 50 free is sixth quickest in school history.
In the 50 free prelims, Kroll had previously set the program's sixth fastest mark at 22.76 before later besting her own top mark in the finals by .15.
"After a solid morning, the ladies came out on a mission tonight," head coach Dave Rollins said. "Being more aggressive paid off in their races. We saw many improvements from the morning, which is what we are looking for. Being our second competition of the season, we are still a little rusty with race details, but couldn't be happier with the way they competed tonight. Free relay was two seconds faster than the conference last year and under the old meet record. Jasmin setting two meet records was awesome to see as well. We get into some great events tomorrow and very much looking forward to it."
As a team, FGCU soared to second place on the team leaderboard, with 305 points heading into Friday's action. Akron paces the 12-team field with 470.5 points.
FGCU also made the podium in two separate relay events on Thursday. Kroll, Libby Russum, Mia Burke and Liv Hettinger teamed up in the 200-yard free relay to capture silver at 1:31.68. In the 400 medley relay, the Alicja Ulicka, Jenna Gwinn, Russum and Kroll squad took third place at 3:43.23.
Five Eagles secured points in the 50-yard breast: Gwinn (5th), Ella Smith (12th), Karen Arngeirsdottir(14th), Burke (19th) and Grace Ward (20th) each contributed to the Eagles' cause.
