Women's soccer pushes No. 2 Texas Tech, falls 1-0 in NCAA First Round

Florida Gulf Coast University women's soccer pushed No. 2-seed Texas Tech University to the brink Friday in the NCAA First Round but ultimately fell 1-0 in Lubbock, Texas.

"Tough loss," head coach Jim Blankenship said. "The ladies fought with tremendous heart and demonstrated their rightful place. I'm incredibly proud of their growth this season. Excited to witness the future with this young team. Our seniors should take immense pride in their leadership and back-to-back championships."

FGCU's Cinderella run of a 2023 campaign through the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament and into the NCAA First Round comes to a close with the Eagles posting a record of 12-5-5. Texas Tech (16-1-4) advances to play seventh-seeded Princeton in the second round next week.

The star of the night was freshman goalkeeper Olivia Molina. Molina kept the Red Raiders off the board for nearly 80 minutes.

The chilly weather, the raucous crowd and Red Raiders' relentless offensive pressure did not faze the ASUN All-Freshman Team selection. Molina snagged eight saves while facing a barrage of 26 shots, nine of which were on goal.

Texas Tech was finally able to break through the scrappy Eagles defense and the Molina wall in the 78th minute. Alex Kerr's one-touch opportunity was redirected into the top right corner of the net.

Molina ended the season with 117 saves, a FGCU single-season record.

FGCU had a golden opportunity to stun the No. 4-ranked Red Raiders and the women's college soccer world in the 69th minute as ASUN First Teamer Kendal Gargiula produced a runaway strike off the bottom right post.

The Eagles were able to counter TTU with six shot attempts. Five different Eagles produced a shot Friday as ASUN First Team member, Tournament MVP and Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week selection Erika Zschuppe led the charge with two.

FGCU now falls to 1-8 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
