FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University women's soccer earned a 1-1 draw Sunday against Lipscomb on Senior Day at Pickering Field.
The Eagles celebrated the senior contributions of Grace Paradis, Savannah Larsen and Jenna Butcofski.
"Great team effort today in what turned out to be an exciting game," head coach Jim Blankenship said. "I'm proud of how well they competed today, and we continue to get better each week."
The Eagles (8-4-3, 5-1-2 ASUN) chased the Bisons (11-4-1, 7-0-1 ASUN) for the majority of the match as Lipscomb won the possession battle 58 to 42 percent. Lipscomb also outpaced FGCU in offensive productivity as the Bisons rattled off 20 shots, while the Eagles' countered with only eight.
Only two of the Eagles' eight shots were on goal, but FGCU took advantage of a first-half opportunity and struck first in the 38th minute – scoring a goal courtesy of Ashley Labbe. Labbe has scored a goal in three straight matches.
Erika Zschuppe played a midfield ball down the sideline for Maya Henley Buisan, who sent over a cross toward Labbe to redirect into the back of the net. The Eagles surprised the undefeated and first-place Bisons with a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
Lipscomb responded in the 50th minute to tie the match at one. The Bisons kept up the pressure with 10 second-half shots, but the Eagles defense did not break, earning the point and a quality draw.
Entering the day, FGCU needed a tie, a Bellamine loss and a Kennesaw State loss to clinch a spot in the upcoming ASUN Tournament. Bellarmine lost 2-1 to North Alabama, but Kennesaw State tied North Florida 1-1.
A Central Arkansas win on Sunday positioned the Eagles into sole possession of third place in the conference standings.
Olivia Molina grabbed nine saves between the pipes to preserve the tie. Molina is now just four saves away from breaking FGCU's single-season save mark of 85.
The Eagles will finish out the regular season with three road matches, beginning Thursday, Oct. 12 at Bellarmine.
