Eagles drop 1-0 decision in 87th minute at Lipscomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision against Lipscomb University Saturday. The Eagles held on for 87 minutes before conceding a goal to the defending ASUN champions.

Lipscomb is the only team in the league to have clinched a spot in the 2023 Tournament with 15 points, and the Eagles now have eight points and are tied with Bellarmine University and Stetson University. This is the Eagles' (3-4-4, 2-1-2 ASUN) first defeat in conference this season.

"Better team lost tonight. Our backline and attitude to defend as a team against a very dangerous opponent was excellent," head coach Jesse Cormier said. "Our issue is we had far too many chances to put this game away and just lacked the composure and quality and failed to capitalize when they were vulnerable.

"We have to develop the confidence to finish our opportunities and unfortunately paid the price tonight for being too wasteful. Our attack must be more lethal to achieve our objectives this season."

Overall, FGCU out-shot the Bisons (7-2-3, 5-0-0 ASUN) 16-11 while having an impressive six shots on goal to the hosts' two. Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Copeland made one save and conceded one goal.

In the first half, Luis Lugo took the game's first shot at 5:12, but it was blocked. From there, defense ruled as both teams fired four shots each, but none would connect. For the last 20 minutes of the half, defenses continued to dominate and the first half ended scoreless.

The Green & Blue came out firing in the second half, releasing five shots to the Bisons two in the first 16 minutes. Two of the shots came from Lugo, but Lipscomb's goalkeeper Juan Carlos Rodriguez was there to corral them.

The Bisons kept applying pressure as Tyrese Spicer and Malachi Jones's shots were off target in the 79th and 80th minute. The Eagles responded with a pair of shots, but neither would connect.

With less than three minutes left in the defensive battle, Lipscomb broke the deadlock as Ploutarchos Alonefti sent a flying shot past Copeland to give the Bisons a 1-0 lead and control of the ASUN standings.

The Eagles will now return home to battle No. 23 in the US Coaches poll and No. 7 in the RPI Rankings and 2022 NCAA Sweet Sixteen team, Florida International University (7-2-3) Tuesday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Pickering Field.
