TAMPA, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University's women's tennis team began the Fall season at the Bedford Cup hosted by University of South Florida. The tournament was from Friday through today.
"Extremely grateful to coach this group, they are engaged in learning and growing not just as tennis players, but as people," head coach
Courtney Vernon said. "These women spent the weekend supporting each other and giving their all each match they played. They will continue to grow in this mindset and represent the values and the culture they have created."
Fanny Norin and newcomer
Paloma Goldsmith tallied two doubles victories over the course of two days. The pair first defeated Sara Rakim (Florida A&M University) and Alisa Lyshko (University of North Florida) Friday with a 6-2 victory in the White draw doubles quarterfinals. One day later they produced a 6-2 win in the semifinals against Sabrina Ibarra and Melisa Senli from USF.
Norin and Goldsmith fell 6-3 in the finals against FIU's Petja Drame and Salma Loudili.
Jordana Ossa and
Ida Ferding dropped their Gold draw match 6-3 against USF's Nadja Bay Christians and Marta Falceto Font on Friday.
Isabella Colmenares and Madeline Joffe fell 6-3 against Kristyna Hrancova and Katerina Mandelikova from Florida International.
In singles action
Amelia Kopel won all three of her matches. On Friday she defeated Ibarra 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 before securing a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Susan Salinas from FAMU. On Saturday she produced a 6-1, 6-1 showing against Stetson's Cleanne Pickel.
Ossa produced a 6-3, 6-3 win against Jasmin Makela from North Florida in the quarterfinals before falling 6-1, 6-0 to Mandelikova in the semifinals.
FGCU will be back in action this fall as it hosts Ava Maria Oct. 13 at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
