Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Eagles Come Up Short Against Florida Atlantic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men's tennis team (2-2) was unable to capitalize on home-court advantage Wednesday night, falling 5-2 to Florida Atlantic (3-2) at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

"FAU played a good match today," said FGCU head men's tennis coach CJ Weber. "It was really tough on us, especially after losing the doubles. We tried to be tough enough in the singles; but in the end, FAU was too good for us. We're going to keep working hard, so hopefully we can beat teams like this soon enough."

The day started off competitively, with the doubles point coming down to the final decision.

Redshirt juniors Randy Wilson (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Miami Palmetto/Louisville) and Marcelo Sepulveda (Monterrey, Mexico/Penn Foster/Alabama) fell 6-2 at No. 2, but junior Eric Oncins (Orlando, Fla./Montverde Academy) and redshirt junior Guglielmo Stefanacci (Prato, Italy/International School of Florence) rallied at No. 3 to win 6-3 and tie the match.

The Owls responded, though, defeating redshirt junior Magnus Johnson (Naples, Fla./Homeschool/UCF) and senior Max Damm (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal School) 6-3 at No. 1.

Damm would fall 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6, and Oncins was defeated 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4. Wilson would push through for a point via a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3.  but Sepulveda fell 6-2, 7-6 (7) at No. 2 to clinch it for the Owls.

The highlight for the Eagles in singles was Johnson earning a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 1. Guglielmo dropped a 7-6 (7), 6-4 decision at No. 5.
