FORT MYERS, Fla. – It was a clean sweep for the 72nd-ranked FGCU men's tennis team on Senior Night as the Eagles took down Lipscomb, 7-0. The Green and Blue improve to 12-6 overall and 5-1 in the ASUN while the Bisons fall to 4-12 and 1-5 in league play. With the win, the Eagles also clinched a spot in the ASUN Championship which will be hosted by FGCU from April 22-24.
In between doubles and singles, the Eagles honored their two seniors,
Juan Montes and
Pedro Maciel. Montes is a five-year member of the Green and Blue and is a two-time All-ASUN selection. Maciel has been with the Eagles for four years, contributing the Eagles run of success with solid play in both singles and doubles.
"Today was another fantastic match for us," said head coach
CJ Weber. "Lipscomb came out firing in doubles, but thankfully we were able to weather the storm and still take the doubles point. And then in singles, we just flat out took care of business. It was a great senior day for Montes and Pedro! I really enjoyed celebrating them today, and it was great to get a good win for both of them. Montes played unbelievable today! His family was here in town, so that was a really special day for him!"
In doubles, sophomore
Eric Oncins (Orlando, Fla./Montverde Academy) and redshirt-sophomore
Randy Wilson (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Miami Palmetto/Louisville) earned a couple of breaks early and held on to win 6-4 on court three. On court one, junior
Max Damm (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) and redshirt-sophomore
Magnus Johnson (Naples, Fla./Homeschool/UCF) fell behind 4-1, but won the final five games of the set to clinch the doubles point for the Eagles.
With the Eagles now up 1-0, Montes quickly doubled the lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win on court four. Oncins followed on court six with a 6-2, 6-1 victory to make it 3-0.
Redshirt-sophomore
Guglielmo Stefanacci (Prato, Italy/International School of Florence) clinched the match for the Eagles, winning 6-2, 6-2 on court five.
Wilson and Johnson each added straight-set wins on courts three and one, respectively, before redshirt-sophomore

CJ WEBER
FGCU is led by three-time ASUN Coach of the Year
CJ Weber, who has coached 32 ASUN All-Conference selections since joining the Green and Blue in 2011. In his seventh year, Weber has compiled a 115-83 (.577) overall record and a 48-19 (.707) record in ASUN play. In 2014-15, Weber guided the Eagles to their first-ever ASUN Championship and first-ever ASUN Regular Season title after a program-best 17 wins. In his third season, Weber led Jordi Vives to a No. 35 national ranking, a nation-leading 14-match unbeaten streak and the round of 32 in the 2014 NCAA Tournament - the program's first appearance. The Eagles completed a perfect ASUN regular season in both 2015 and 2016, finishing with conference titles as well as a Coach of the Year honor for Weber. FGCU again won the 2017 ASUN Championship and made its second NCAA appearance. The Eagles returned to the mountaintop by claiming the 2019 regular season and tournament championships. Weber earned his third ASUN Coach of the Year honor and led the Green and Blue to their third trip to the NCAA Tournament.
