ORLANDO, Fla. – The FGCU men's tennis team made a trip up to Orlando to take on #47 UCF, Friday afternoon where the Eagles fell to the Knights, 6-1. The Eagles drop to 6-4 on the season while UCF improves to 3-8.
"UCF has a really solid team that can compete with anyone in the country," said head coach
CJ Weber. "We started slow in doubles, and that made it really tough on us to come back. Against a team like this, we need to be ready from the first point to even have a chance. We did pretty well at a few spots, but not well enough in others to keep the match tight enough. I'm really proud of Lopez for giving the Eagles a great win! It was a very disciplined match for him, not everything went his way, but he stayed fighting and got a very valuable win for himself and the team. We're looking forward to St John's tomorrow."
Redshirt-sophomore
Juan Lopez (Gachancipa, Colombia/Colegio Virtual Siglio XXI) picked up the lone win for the Eagles, a 7-6 (1), 6-4 win on court six. With the win, Lopez improves to 2-3 in singles action this spring.
UCF jumped ahead in the match by winning the doubles point with victories on courts one and two.
In singles play, the Knights secured straight-set victories on courts two, three, four, and five to clinch the match. Redshirt-sophomore
Magnus Johnson (Naples, Fla./Homeschool/UCF) won his first set on court one, 7-5, before dropping the second set, 3-6. In the 10-point tiebreaker, Trey Hildebrand, ranked #55 in the country, triumphed over Johnson, 10-6.
