Baseball Takes Down the Bonnies for Seventh Straight Win

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team extended its winning streak to seven games, Wednesday night, as they defeated St. Bonaventure, 13-5. The Eagles improve to 7-2 on the season while the Bonnies fall to 0-5.

"We had another good night offensively," said head coach Dave Tollett. "Having a big inning early lets our pitcher relax a little and Mason [Miller] showed what he is capable of by striking out nine in five-plus scoreless innings. Looking forward to see if we can continue this hot stretch into the weekend."

Sophomore Mason Miller (Odessa, Fla./Mitchell HS) was great on the mound, throwing 5.1 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts while allowing just four hits and two walks to pick up his first win of the season.

At the plate, the 3-4 hitters junior Joe Kinker (North Port, Fla./Venice HS) and junior Alejandro Figueredo (Sucre, Venezuela/West Oaks HS/Seminole State) combined to go 5-for-9 with seven RBI. Sophomore Trevor Kole (Parkland, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons HS) also had a solid day at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

The Eagles got on the board in the second as graduate student Bobby Head (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange HS/Austin Peay) singled in the game's first run before redshirt-junior Brian Ellis (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) was hit by a pitch and sophomore Ian Farrow (Merritt Island, Fla./Merritt Island HS) walked with the bases loaded to drive in two more. Kinker then provided the big blow as he hit a double over the right fielder's head to clear the bases and make it a 6-0 game after two innings.

In the third, Kole added two more runs with a double before junior Alejandro Rodriguez (Cidra, Puerto Rico/Montverde Academy/Eastern Florida State) drove in another in the fourth with a run-scoring fielder's choice.

Figueredo provided the cherry on top in the fifth as he blasted his first home run of the year deep to left field, a three-run shot that put the Eagles up 12-0.

After the Bonnies scored five in the seventh to make it a little closer, Kinker picked up his fourth RBI of the night in the bottom of the seventh thanks to the speed of junior Jalen Townsend (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park HS). After walking, Townsend stole second before coming around to score on an infield hit to second by Kinker.

Redshirt-sophomore Daniel Batcher (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins/State College of Florida) closed out the game in the ninth for the Eagles, striking out three in the inning.

The Eagles will return to Swanson Stadium this weekend when they host Seton Hall. The series gets started on Friday with the first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
