TAMPA, Fla. – FGCU men's soccer (4-2-3, 1-1-2 ASUN) drew 0-0 against North Florida (2-6-2, 1-2-1 ASUN) on Friday evening at Corbett Stadium on the campus of USF. This is the second tied game for the Eagles in the ASUN and the third one overall.
Senior midfielder
Davi Alves (
Belo Horizonte, Brazil/ West Florida) registered four shots with two on goal.
"First of all, we want to thank USF for being amazing host for us. The result was disappointing, as we had fifteen shots, to their three, and had some chances to score to get all the points" said head coach
Jesse Cormier. "From the stats, I felt we were territorially dominant but need more efficiency with our final action. We had some excellent contributions from players coming into the game tonight. When teams sit back, and have little interest in coming out to play us, we have to be significantly better with our final action and be decisive to score goals. We will get back to work and prepare for UCA next week."
Overall, FGCU outshot the Ospreys by a whopping 15-3 advantage while having seven shots on goal to their three. The Eagles also had a 4-0 advantage on corner kicks.
Freshman defender Nadav Ohayon (
Herzliya, Israel/Nomi Shemer) picked up one yellow card in the 6th minute before picking up his second in the 58
th minute, leading to his ejection.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Wyatt Kistner (
Midlothian/Va. /Cosby HS) allowed no goals, making three saves for the evening.
Graduate forward
Aedon Kyra (
Sydney, Australia./UNLV) nearly gave the Eagles the lead in the 23rd minute as he fired the ball to the bottom right side of the net where the keeper was able to corral it.
From there the Eagles were dangerous firing four shots that included two from graduate defender
Shandel Senior (
Kingston, Jamaica/ Daytona State) but none connected.
UNF's Braden Masker took the final shot of the half to send both teams to the locker room scoreless.
In the second half, FGCU kept trying as sophomore defender
Lucas Windschauer (
Tampa, Fla/Osceola HS) drove the ball to the center of the net but Micah Gun fell to the ground to save the powerful shot in the 51
st minute.
The crucial moment came at the 57
th minute as the Ospreys' Tom Luto fired a penalty kick but Kistner showed why he has three shutouts for the season, making the huge save to keep the Eagles in the game.
Seconds later Ohayon was ejected from the game and FGCU had 10 men to continue the Florida rivalry match. The advantage did not last long for UNF as LJ Estes received a straight five minutes later leading to both teams playing a man down for the final 28 minutes.
The Green and Blue responded by sending six shots that included a pair each from Alves, freshman midfielder
Alon Drey (
Or'Aqiva,Isarel) and senior defender
Aiden Jokomba (
Anchovy St. James, Jamaica/Cornwall College) but none connected and the match ended 0-0.
FGCU will return to action as they head to Central Arkansas on Saturday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. in Conway, Arkansas.
