Men's Soccer Drops 2-1 Contest to Stetson at Home

FGCU registered eight shots with two coming on frame and edged Stetson in corner kicks, 4-3.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men's soccer team (2-3-3, 2-2-2 ASUN) closed out the regular season falling to Stetson (1-4-2, 1-3-2 ASUN) by a final score of, 2-1, Friday night at the FGCU Soccer Complex.

"Stetson was more committed and had the better winning mentality tonight," said head coach Jesse Cormier. "We didn't bring enough to the game; communication was poor which is often a good measurement of the collective ambition and intensity of a team. If we want our season to continue, there has to be more leadership, more willingness to sacrifice, and overall more quality in all phases to change our situation in our trajectory to make a run at the championship."

Stetson got on the board in the 24th minute with a goal from Ben Alram as it was the only score of the first half. FGCU produced three shots in the period but none came on target. Stetson was able to manufacture eight shots in the first period, three coming on goal with keeper Gustavo Vasconcelos (Recife, Brazil/Colegio GGE) securing two saves.

Both teams were slow out of the gates in the second half, with each side producing one shot inside the first 15 minutes. Stetson's second shot though by Alex Turner in the 67th minute, proved to be the game-winner as the Hatter's went up 2-0. In the 74th minute, Markus Maurer (Friedrichshafen, Germany/Monroe College) launched a shot towards the net but was denied to the keeper's bottom left. Just under 10 minutes later, junior defender Ethan Dudley (St. Johns, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) struck a header off a cross to the near post but the shot went wide.

In the final second, Marcos Da Paz (Recife, Brazil/Fayetteville Academy/Columbia International) netted his second goal of the season, striking a shot from outside the 18-yard box with 0.4 left on the clock.

FGCU registered eight shots with two coming on frame and edged Stetson in corner kicks, 4-3. The Hatters walked away with 11 shots, four coming on goal. Trevin Myers (Lehigh Acres, Fla./Riverdale HS/Chowan University) led the Eagles in shots with two.

Vasconcelos ended the night snagging two saves in the full 90 minutes.
