Men’s Soccer Draws 1-1 Against FAU at Home Tuesday Night

The Eagles looked to be in line for their first win of the season but a foul from about 30 yards out gave FAU the opportunity it needed.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men's soccer team (0-1-1) conceded the tying goal with 13 seconds left in the second period as the Eagles battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw with FAU (3-0-2) Tuesday night at the FGCU Soccer Complex.

"There's a reason why FAU is undefeated, they never quit and are very physical," said head coach Jesse Cormier. Even when we had the lead, you could never really be comfortable so you have to give them a lot of credit. I thought our guys were very committed to the defending side and not enough commitment was given when it came to the attacking side. So that was the disappointing part for me; the lack of our dynamic nature, which I know we have. We just need to have better chemistry."

Each side in the first half seemed to have the same amount of possession but the Eagles and the Owls combined for just six total shots – FAU produced the only two targets on frame. Coming out of the scoreless break, it took the Green and Blue less than 20 minutes to get on the board.

A shot from Trevin Myers (Lehigh Acres, Fla./Riverdale HS/Chowan) earned FGCU a corner kick. Darius Kerr-Cooper (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary's HS) then struck a liner into the box which bounced around a scuffle of players before Tremain Simpson (Montego Bay, Jamaica/Kingston College) finally stepped in and struck a one-timer to the back of the net in the 68th minute – the first of his Eagle career.

Keeper Gustavo Vasconcelos (Recife, Brazil/Colegio GGE) was forced to make a save just four minutes later to preserve the lead. In the 80th minute, Alex Guichard (West Palm Beach, Fla./American Heritage HS/Charleston) nearly gave FGCU a 2-0 advantage but his shot outside the 15-yard box was denied with a diving save.

The Eagles looked to be in line for their first win of the season but a foul from about 30 yards out gave FAU the opportunity it needed. As the clock ticked below 20 seconds, Alonso Camarero's set-piece shot was found inside the far-post as Blake Dean tucked it away for the tie.

FGCU produced two corner kicks in the two 10 minute overtime periods but none were a threat as neither team registered a shot in extra time.

All said FGCU produced eight shots with only two coming on frame while FAU registered 10 shots, six on target. The Eagles won the corner kick battle, 5-4. Vasconcelos snagged five saves in the tying effort.
