FORT MYERS, Fla. – Boosted by an offense that put up the fifth-most points in the program's DI history, the FGCU men's basketball team (4-2) downed Webber International (5-10) by a score of 112-39 on Friday night at Alico Arena.
In addition to the ranking in the record book, the 112 points are the most that the team has scored in the
Michael Fly era. Defensively, the 39 points that the Eagles allowed are the third-lowest in the program's Division I history.
"I didn't think we played like ourselves the other night so it was good to come out tonight with a performance like we had," said head coach
Michael Fly. "We were able to get a lot of the younger guys some significant minutes and were able to tinker a bit with some line-ups as well. I thought they did a good job staying focused to close the game out whereas sometimes your natural tendency is to relax. Overall, we saw some good performances that will help prepare us for later in the year and also help us start to lock in on Georgia Southern next Tuesday."
Multiple Eagles finished their night with career-best performances, most notably
Franco Miller, Jr. (Freeport, Bahamas/Ole Miss) who turned in his first double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. Junior
Dom London (Christiana, Pa./Harcum College) paced the Eagles with 22 points, a career-best performance, and was followed by sophomore
Cyrus Largie's (Miramar, Fla./Mater Lakes Academy) career-high 14. The trio of freshman
Zach Anderson (Orlando, Fla./Apopka HS), sophomore
Chance Jackson (Tampa, Fla./Plant HS) and sophomore
Lenny Ricca (Weston, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) recorded personal bests as well. Anderson scored eight points while adding six rebounds and four assists. Jackson netted four, while Ricca scored two.
The Eagles' first-half performance was their strongest to date, as the team shot 57.1 percent from the floor and 11 different players contributed to the group's 52 points. FGCU came out of the gates hot, opening up the night with a 14-0 run and holding the Warriors scoreless until after the first media timeout.
The Green & Blue went on multiple runs in the opening 20 minutes, including a 6-0 stretch heading into the break. Largie's nine points paced the Eagles as they went into the locker room, but the offense was well-balanced overall.
The Eagles came out of the break picking up right where they left off and opened things up with a 19-2 run that extended the lead to 73-26. London contributed to the spurt with back-to-back treys, pushing him into double digits for the first time in his Green & Blue career.
Defensively, the game was highlighted by the efforts of sophomore
Dakota Rivers (Windermere, Fla./Windermere HS), who surpassed former Eagle Marc-Eddy Norelia (2014-17) and is now tied with former teammate
Brian Thomas (2017-19) for seventh all-time in career blocks (50). The six that Rivers finished his night with stand as the third-most that any Eagle has notched in a single outing.
Performance in the backcourt was also highlighted by the team's ability to draw charges, which was done four times. Forcing turnovers was another strong point in the Eagles' outing, as the team racked up 40 points off of 28 Webber International miscues.
The visiting Warriors were led by Kris Goettert's seven points, four boards and two steals. Overall, the team shot 15-56 from the floor (26.8%) and were limited to just 15 attempts total from beyond the arc.
