FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women's tennis team collected a doubles and singles victory but fell to the visiting RedHawks, 6-1, Thursday afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex.  

Maja Ornberg (Kil, Sweden/De la Gardiegymnasiet, Lidkoping) and Sofia Perez (Alajuela, Costa Rica/Florida Virtual School) collected a doubles victory on court No. 3 for FGCU (0-2) as Satomi Momose (Tokyo, Japan/St. Petersburg College) – the reigning ASUN Player of the Week – secured a 10-5 tiebreak winner for her second-straight singles win. Lourdes Ramalle (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Portland) narrowly fell in a tiebreaker with an 11-9 decision on court No. 6.

"Today was a really tough match and credit to Miami, they competed very well," said head coach Courtney Vernon. "They're at the top of their conference [MAC] so we knew today would be a challenge. We have an opportunity to go into tomorrow against South Alabama and continue to work to get better."

Miami (1-0) took a 1-0 lead after claiming courts one and two during doubles play. Milana Lysova eventually clinched the match for the RedHawks on court No. 4.

FGCU returns back to the Tennis Complex tomorrow morning to face South Alabama at 10 am. It will be the Jaguars season opener.

HEAD COACH COURTNEY VERNON
FGCU's women's tennis team is led by three-time ASUN Coach of the Year Courtney Vernon (entering 7th season) who led the Eagles to back-to-back ASUN regular-season crowns in her fifth season in 2018. She has mentored her student-athletes into earning 59 ASUN All-Conference and All-Academic honors, including 2014, 2016 and 2017 ASUN Freshman of the Year as well as the 2016, 2017 and 2019 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the 2018 Player of the Year. Vernon has led the Green and Blue to a 72-52 overall record (.582) and 31-8 conference record (.795).

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 80 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 12 seasons at the Division-I level. Additionally, in just eight seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 36 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Seven FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport - including both men's and women's soccer again in 2018. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
