Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Balanced Scoring Propels No. 25 Women's Basketball to Historic Rout Over Stetson, 89-47

42-point victory represents largest margin in series history.

DELAND, Fla. - Balanced scoring, led by 19-point performances from Nasrin Ulel and Davion Wingate, highlighted the No. 25 FGCU women's basketball team's (16-2, 3-0) 89-47 win over Stetson (7-9, 1-2) in the Edmunds Center on Saturday.

"We played much better today," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "We were better defensively, and we moved the ball quicker on offense. Most of our players played really well, too, and I loved the energy from (Kerstie) Phills."

With the win, the Eagles extended the nation's third-longest conference winning streak to 31 straight and are now 26-4 all-time against the Hatters, including wins in six straight and 15 of the past 16. The 42-point victory was the largest winning margin in series history, and FGCU is also tied with Stony Brook as the only two teams with 16 wins nationally.

The Green and Blue will stay on the road to face top-75 RPI North Florida (9-7, 2-1) on Monday at 7 p.m. The Ospreys are the last team to defeat the Eagles in conference play (Feb. 1, 2018, 75-73), which coincidentally also came when FGCU was ranked, although the Eagles were without the services of Tytionia Adderly in that game.

Ulel (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta HS) and Wingate (Atlanta, Ga./Stephenson HS) combined to shoot 13-for-28 from the field, including a 9-for-18 performance from long distance. The duo made half of FGCU's 18 3-point field goals.

Meanwhile, Keri Jewett-Giles tallied 15 points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals. Adderly added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Kerstie Phills had 11 points and five boards. Anja Marinkovic added eight points in seven minutes off the bench in the second half, while Ashli O'Neal produced five assists and four rebounds over 16 minutes.

After a slow start offensively, FGCU scored 19 points over the final 5:22 of the opening quarter. Ulel and Jewett-Giles (Fort Myers, Fla./Dunbar HS) combined for 17 of those 19 points, while Ulel had 10 points in the frame alone.

After closing the first on a 9-2 run, the Eagles opened the second on a 12-2 run, highlighted by a trio of 3-pointers along with a three-point play from Adderly (Jupiter, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS). With FGCU holding a 34-18 lead, Wingate scored 13 straight for her team over a three-minute stretch to push the advantage to 22 with 4:49 left in the half.

Phills (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian HS) and Ulel combined for the final six points of the half as FGCU took a 27-point lead into the break. Marinkovic (Sombor, Serbia/Northern Secondary) then helped the Eagles overcome a 12-point third with an eight-point fourth quarter to help ice the game.

Notes
FGCU's 18 3-point field goals fell one shy of their season-high that was set against FIU (Nov. 5) and Temple (Dec. 22). In fact, those two outings remain the only two games with 19 by a Division I team against a Division I team this year.

O'Neal (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming HS) remains 18 points shy of 1,000 in her career.

FGCU is now 12-2 all-time as a ranked Division I team.

With her 19 points, Ulel passed Stephanie Haas (1,138, 2012-16) for eighth-place on the program's Division I era career scoring list. She now has 1,150, which is 32 shy of Adrianne McNally (1,181, 2007-10) for seventh.

COACH SMESKO
FGCU head coach Karl Smesko led the 2018-19 Eagles to the program's fifth undefeated conference regular season since 2011-12, as well as the ninth consecutive season with at least 25 victories. The Green and Blue finished 28-5 overall and 16-0 in ASUN play, capturing the team's ninth ASUN regular season championship and sixth ASUN tournament championship. The team finished the season receiving votes in the final AP Poll and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in eight seasons before falling to host No. 19 Miami in the first round. It was the team's 12th-straight postseason appearance in 12 years of Division-I existence - the only program to ever do such.

Over the past five seasons, Smesko has guided FGCU to three 30-plus win seasons while recording a 149-28 (.841) record overall. That win total ranks eighth-best in the nation over that stretch - the most among all mid-majors and ahead of programs such as Oregon State and Stanford.

Including 2018-19, Smesko has also guided the Eagles to 15-straight 20-win seasons. He maintains a record of 540-121 (.817) overall in his career (third highest winning percentage among active D1 coaches behind only UConn's Geno Auriemma and Baylor's Kim Mulkey), including a 189-16 (.922) mark in ASUN play. Over the past eight+ seasons, including this year, he has guided FGCU to a 127-4 (.969) record in conference play with five undefeated seasons. The now nine-time ASUN Coach of the Year earned his 400th career coaching win in 2014-15 in just 493 career games, two games faster than Auriemma.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 80 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 12 seasons at the Division-I level. Additionally, in just eight seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 36 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Seven FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport - including both men's and women's soccer again in 2018. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.35 GPA in the classroom in the spring 2018 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for twenty consecutive semesters. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
