FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior
Marjorie Boilesen scored two goals as the FGCU women's soccer team (3-3-0) shutout Ball State (5-2-0) by a score of 2-0 Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
"We knew that this was going to be a tough match," head coach
Jim Blankenship said. "Ball State is very good, very organized and hard to crack. I'm pleased with our team and the result we earned. A win like this is fantastic and something I hope we can build on."
The Eagles attacked the Ball State back line from kick-off as senior
Evdokia Popadinova (Hadzhidimovo, Bulgaria/Northwestern Ohio) took the first shot of the match just under three minutes after the whistle. In the opening 20 minutes of play, the Eagles tallied four corner kicks and spent most of the time in the front third of the field.
Both freshman
Louise Lillback and redshirt-junior
Megan Young (White Lake, MI/Walled Lake Northern HS) wore down the Cardinals' keeper with on-frame shots, but came up empty.
After five FGCU attempts,
Boilesen (Sao Paulo, Brazil/West Florida) broke open the scoring in the 31st minute with her third goal of the season, putting the home team on top 1-0. Both
Lillback (Stockholm, Sweden/Tibble Gymnasium) and sophomore
Kara Kyramarios (Titusville, FL/Titusville HS) were credited with assists on the play.
The Green and Blue outshot Ball State 8-1 in the opening half and took the 1-0 edge into the break.
After dominating the opening stanza, FGCU was awarded a huge boost in momentum when Ball State's starting keeper was issued a red card just minutes into the second half.
Boilesen was given the opportunity to take the free kick for the Eagles and she capitalized on it by scoring her second goal of the day after curling the ball in near the left post.
The Green and Blue took advantage of the 10-player scenario and prevented the Cardinals from attempting a shot on-frame until the 63rd minute when Melissa Diceman tested senior
Melissa Weck with a hard-hit ball that the keeper collected for her first save of the match.
Weck (Yorba Linda, CA/Esperanza HS) finished her third shutout of the season with three saves. She now has 30.4 career shutouts and needs just one more to overtake Stephanie Powers (2008-11) for second place in the Eagle record book. With 20 career goals,
Boilesen is just two away from checking in to the top five of FGCU's all-time scorers list.

COACH JIM BLANKENSHIP
A veteran of over two decades in collegiate coaching, head coach Jim Blankenship, who was named the ASUN Coach of the Year in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, has built FGCU women's soccer into a yearly contender in the ASUN Conference and a rising program in the South Region in just 12 seasons. Blankenship started the program in 2007 and has since guided the Eagles to 11 double-digit win seasons, culminating with ASUN Regular Season Championships in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017. In 2011 and 2012 he also led the Eagles to back-to-back ASUN Tournament titles as they became the first team in the history of the university to make it to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles went on to win the 2014 ASUN Tournament and hosted the first NCAA Championship event on campus. The Eagles earned their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance with the 2015 ASUN Tournament Championship and won their first NCAA game at USF in 2015 while finishing 24th in the nation. In 2016, the Eagles made it three-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament with a third-straight ASUN Tournament title. A year later, the Eagles became the first ASUN women's soccer program to make four-straight NCAA Tournaments with another tournament title in 2017. Blankenship has guided FGCU to a 159-58-23 (.713) overall record through the first 12 seasons of the program's existence, including a 76-14-14 (.798) mark in the ASUN. Blankenship's impressive career record of 399-128-34 (.741) over 26 seasons has come while leading FGCU, the University of Miami, Lynn University and St. Thomas University.
