@FGCU_WSoccer drops 2-0 road match to Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The FGCU women's soccer team (1-1-0) fell on the road to Michigan (3-0-0) by a score of 2-0, Friday evening at U-M Soccer Stadium.

"Tonight was a disappointing result," said head coach Jim Blankenship. "You got to give credit to Michigan and how they came out. We'll learn from this outcome and start getting ready for La Salle at home Thursday night."

It was a slow first half for the Eagles as the attack struggled to get things turning, recording just one shot courtesy of newcomer Louise Lillback (Stockholm, Sweden/Tibble Gymnasium) in the 14th minute. Following a corner kick, Hannah Blake put the Wolverines on the board to make it 1-0 in the 24th minute. Right before the intermission, Meredith Haakenson gave Michigan a 2-0 lead in the 43rd. A cross from just outside the 15-yard box bounced a few times before it was headed in.

Melissa Weck (Yorba Linda, CA/Esperanza HS) came away with three saves in the first half, facing seven shots.

In the second half, the FGCU defense limited Michigan to a pair of shots with only one coming on frame. Meanwhile, the offense began to find some rhythm, coming away with four shots with close opportunities coming from Evdokia Popadinova (Hadzhidimovo, Bulgaria/Northwestern Ohio) and Megan Young (White Lake, MI/Walled Lake Northern HS).

In the 78th minute, Popadinova fired a shot just outside the 15-yard box that sailed over the crossbar. Six minutes later, Young launched one from about 20 yards forcing the Wolverine keeper to diver to the near post for the save.

Weck capped off her night in net with four saves. On offense, FGCU walked away with five shots, one on target.

COACH JIM BLANKENSHIP
A veteran of over two decades in collegiate coaching, head coach Jim Blankenship, who was named the ASUN Coach of the Year in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, has built FGCU women's soccer into a yearly contender in the ASUN Conference and a rising program in the South Region in just 12 seasons. Blankenship started the program in 2007 and has since guided the Eagles to 11 double-digit win seasons, culminating with ASUN Regular Season Championships in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017. In 2011 and 2012 he also led the Eagles to back-to-back ASUN Tournament titles as they became the first team in the history of the university to make it to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles went on to win the 2014 ASUN Tournament and hosted the first NCAA Championship event on campus. The Eagles earned their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance with the 2015 ASUN Tournament Championship and won their first NCAA game at USF in 2015 while finishing 24th in the nation. In 2016, the Eagles made it three-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament with a third-straight ASUN Tournament title. A year later, the Eagles became the first ASUN women's soccer program to make four-straight NCAA Tournaments with another tournament title in 2017. Blankenship has guided FGCU to a 157-56-23 (.710) overall record through the first 12 seasons of the program's existence, including a 76-14-14 (.798) mark in the ASUN. Blankenship's impressive career record of 397-127-34 (.741) over 26 seasons has come while leading FGCU, the University of Miami, Lynn University and St. Thomas University.
