Goodwin joins Atlanta Hawks on two-way deal

ATLANTA - The Atlanta Hawks have officially signed former FGCU star guard Brandon Goodwin to a two-way contract for the 2019-20 season. The news was initially reported a week ago by Shams Charania of The Athletic.

It will be Goodwin's third NBA team in just over a year after he appeared in limited minutes over 16 games with the Denver Nuggets last year on a two-way contract. He performed well with the Nuggets summer league team this summer, averaging 18.5 points and 5.5 assists over four games. In the G-League last year, he averaged 21.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 5.1 assists over stints with the Memphis Hustle (Memphis Grizzlies) and the Iowa Wolves (Minnesota Timberwolves). He had previously signed with the Grizzlies organization after being undrafted and before being picked up by the Nuggets.

"I'm so happy for Brandon and what he's accomplished due to his tireless work ethic and competitiveness," FGCU head coach Michael Fly said. "He made history as the first FGCU player to put on an NBA uniform and now he is going to get to represent his hometown Atlanta Hawks. Our program is constantly following and supporting him, and I can't wait to see his continued growth on the court."

The Hawks are scheduled to visit Orlando and Miami twice during the 2019-20 season, so FGCU fans could have a chance to see him play in-state.

Goodwin, who was raised in Norcross, Ga -  just 22 miles northeast of Downtown Atlanta, concluded his two-year career with FGCU in 2017-18 by being named an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American, joining Sherwood Brown in 2013 as the only FGCU men's basketball players to garner the award.

The 6-2 guard dominated the ASUN and led the Eagles since becoming eligible for his junior season in 2016-17 after transferring from UCF. He was named the unanimous 2017 ASUN Newcomer of the Year and followed it up by becoming just the second FGCU product to be named ASUN Player of the Year in 2018, once again joining Brown (2013). Additionally, he became the first player in program history to be lauded as a two-time NABC District 3 First Team selection.

Goodwin led FGCU in points (18.6), rebounds (5.5) and assists (4.8) – one of only eight players nationally who paced his team in all three categories in 2017-18. He ranked second in the ASUN in scoring, third in assists, ninth in steals (1.4) and 12th in rebounding – the only player in the league to rank in the top 12 in all four categories.

With 632 points in 34 games, Goodwin surpassed his own single-season program record of 629 points established his junior year in the same amount of contests. He also broke his own single-season D-I program record for free throws made with 144, surpassing his junior year tally of 136.

In league games, the two-time ASUN Player of the Week in 2017-18 ranked fourth in scoring (19.6) and steals (1.7), fifth in assists (4.6) and eighth in rebounding (6.1) – once again the only player to rank in the top 10 in all four categories. Goodwin, who had four double-doubles as a senior, also ranked eighth in ASUN games in field-goal percentage (.538) and finished the regular season by posting scoring performances of 28, 28 and 27 points. He delivered a then Division-I program record 34-point performance in the ASUN tournament championship.

Despite playing just two years with FGCU, Goodwin's name is plastered all over the program's all-time record book, including points (7th, 1,261), assists (5th, 301), field goals made (8th, 442), field-goal percentage (7th, .490) and free throws made (3rd, 280).
