BOCA RATON, Fla. – In the final midweek game of the season, the FGCU baseball team (30-15, 12-3 ASUN) dropped an 11-5 decision to FAU (30-14, 15-6 C-USA) Tuesday night at the Owls' home stadium.
"Our midweek woes continue," head coach
Dave Tollett said. "We need to be able to get a good start from our pitchers in the midweek. We just didn't pitch well all the way around and we let up too many walks. We didn't give ourselves a chance."
Senior
Keith Stevens was credited with the first RBI of the night after he brought in junior
Richie Garcia with a double in the top of the first, but the Owls responded by tagging up seven runs – one unearned - against junior starter
Brenden Heiss (Algonquin, IL/Jacob HS/John A. Logan/Arkansas) over the course of the next two frames. Making his fourth midweek appearance of the year, freshman
Cody Woodring was called from the Eagle bullpen after just 1.2 innings of play.
Both teams' offenses were quiet over the next three innings until the top of the sixth when FGCU used a three-spot to cut down the Owl's lead. Senior
Eric Gonzalez began the spree with an RBI single poked into right field that scored
Stevens (Miami, FL/Miami Killian HS/Hillsborough CC). Junior
Kohl Gilmore followed up with a two-run homer that brought
Gonzalez (Miami, FL/American HS/ASA College) in and made it a 7-4 ballgame.
After a career-long 3.1 scoreless innings of work,
Woodring (Lakeland, FL/McKeel Academy of Technology) handed the mound over to junior
Garrett Bye in the bottom of the sixth. Woodring fanned one Owl and allowed just one hit in his outing.
The Eagles' offense quieted down after their three-run push in the sixth. Stevens and junior
Alex Brait (Viera, FL/Viera HS) recorded the team's only two hits over the next two innings.
Four different pitchers made appearances for the Green and Blue in the final three frames as the Owls extended their lead to 11-4. Junior
Keegan Collett was the only arm who made it through an outing without being tagged with at least one run.
Collett (Dallas, TX/Trinity Christian School/Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa) ended the Owls' time in the batter's box with back-to-back strikeouts in the bottom of the eighth.
Junior
Marc Coffers (Naples, FL/Barron Collier HS) accounted for the final run of the game, pushing
Gilmore (Fort Pierce, FL/John Carroll HS/Indian River) across with a double to right field in the top of the ninth.
Of tonight's 11 individual scoring plays, all but one were executed with two outs on the board. All four of the Eagles' runs were pushed across with two away.
Up Next
The Eagles will head to Deland, Fla. to take on reigning ASUN Champion Stetson (18-26, 7-8 ASUN) for a three-game conference series May 3-5. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday; the teams will wrap things up in 1 p.m. finale on Sunday. The Hatters have claimed the last four meetings between the two teams, but FGCU still holds a 20-16 advantage in the overall series, including an 11-7 mark at Conrad Park.

5X CHAMPS
The 2017 season was a magical one for the Green and Blue that ended in the program's first Division I NCAA Championship tournament berth. The Eagles ended the year 43-20, which included a midweek sweep over No. 2 Florida, single wins over No. 1 Florida State, Miami, and a three-game sweep at UNC Wilmington. The wins over Miami, FSU, and UF marked the first time FGCU defeated all three programs in the same season.
Â
Reaching as high as No. 9 in the polls, the highest of any program at FGCU, the Eagles struggled in April but bounced back to finish third in the ASUN. During the ASUN Championship, FGCU won four games in a span of 29 hours for their first tournament crown.
Â
The Green and Blue earned the No. 2 seed in the Chapel Hill Regional, defeating Michigan 10-6 before losses to Davidson and North Carolina ended their season. The tournament title added to FGCU's four regular season crowns.
