Zderadicka's 15 Points, Late Steal Clinches @FGCU_WBB's 65-64 Road Win Over Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Lisa Zderadicka corralled the game-clinching steal as time expired to give the FGCU women's basketball team (19-4, 10-0 ASUN) a 65-64 win over Liberty (9-14, 5-5) on the road in the Vines Center Saturday afternoon.

"Liberty played a great game," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "They made us pay for every defensive mistake. Kerstie Phills came up big off the bench for us."

With the win, the Green and Blue have now won 10 straight, which represents the 15th double-digit winning streak in program history, as well as just the eighth encompassing only regular season games.

Zderadicka (Vienna, Austria/HAK Korneuburg) starred for the Eagles with 15 points, a game-high eight steals, four rebounds and four assists. Her steal total is the most for an opponent in Vines Center history, and it ties Brittany Kennedy's (Jan. 4, 2012 vs Lipscomb) program record for the most in a conference game.

Additionally, Zderadicka eclipsed 1,000 points in her NCAA career, which started at Houston Baptist, with a late fourth-quarter layup that put her team up 63-60. She becomes the 13th player to wear the Green and Blue to achieve the honor.

Destiny Washington (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North HS) led FGCU in scoring with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Nasrin Ulel (11) and Kerstie Phills (10) also reached double figures.

The Eagles led by nine entering the fourth before Liberty trimmed its deficit to one with just under four minutes left. Ulel (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta HS) answered with a 3-pointer, but Kierra Johnson-Graham produced a steal, a fast-break layup and a free throw to pull Liberty back within one with 1:49 left.

After three combined failed possessions for both teams, Liberty's Bridgett Rettstatt banked a jumper off the glass to give her team a one-point lead with 43 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, however, Phills (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian HS) took a feed from Ulel and converted what turned out to be the game-winning bucket.

In the final seconds, Liberty's Ria Gulley missed a contested layup, but there was a tie up on the rebound, which resulted in another chance for the Flames. The ball wasn't inbounded cleanly and found its way to Zderadicka as time expired.

Earlier in the game, Liberty led by as many as seven in the opening seconds of the second quarter. Following that, Ulel and Keri Jewett-Giles (Fort Myers, Fla./Dunbar HS) converted back-to-back layups to gain momentum, and Ulel followed with a 3-pointer that concluded a 7-0 run to tie the game at 19 apiece less than three minutes later. Chandler Ryan (Groveland, Ill./Morton HS) gave FGCU a 29-26 lead at the half on a 3-pointer with less than a minute left.

The game-tying 3-pointer from Ulel was FGCU's 2,000th all-time in ASUN play. They are now 2,006-for-5,663 (.354) since joining the conference in 2007-08.

COACH SMESKO
FGCU head coach Karl Smesko led the 2017-18 Eagles to another historic season. The Green and Blue finished 31-5 overall and 13-1 in ASUN play, capturing the program's eighth ASUN regular season championship and fifth ASUN tournament championship. The team finished the season ranked 25th in the final USA Today Coaches Poll, recaptured the NCAA record for most 3-point field goals made in a season with 431 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in seven seasons, where the Eagles knocked off 5th-seeded and No. 15 ranked Missouri in the opening round. It was the team's second tournament win over the past three appearances. Over the course of the season, FGCU knocked off three ranked teams - No. 15 Missouri, No. 20 Kentucky and No. 21 DePaul.

Over the past four seasons, Smesko has guided FGCU to three 30 plus win seasons while recording a 121-23 (.840) record overall. The now eight-time ASUN Coach of the Year rallied the 2016-17 team to its seventh straight 25-win campaign, culminating in an ASUN tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2015-16, he was named the espnW mid-major coach of the year following a run that witnessed the Eagles claim a WNIT runner-up finish and a Division-I program best ever 33-6 record. In 2014-15, the team achieved its first-ever top-25 ranking and made another trip to the NCAA Tournament, where the Eagles earned a No. 7 seed and won the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament game, toppling No. 10 seed Oklahoma State.

Including the 2017-18 campaign, Smesko has guided the Eagles to 14-straight 20-win seasons and eight-straight 25-win seasons. He maintains a record of 515-118 (.814) overall in his career, including a 180-16 (.918) mark in ASUN play. Over the past seven + seasons, he has guided FGCU to a 118-4 (.967) record in conference play with four undefeated seasons. Smesko earned his 400th career coaching win in 2014-15 in just 493 career games, two games faster than UConn's Geno Auriemma. Entering 2018-19, he ranked among an elite list of just four active Division I coaches with a career win percentage of .800 or higher, joining Auriemma, Baylor's Kim Mulkey and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer in the esteemed group. Over the past year, first-year NCAA Division-I head coaches Nancy Fahey (Illinois) and Bart Brooks (Belmont) pushed the list to six.
