Defense Dominates As @FGCU_WBB Clinches Share of ASUN Title In 80-46 Win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The FGCU women's basketball team (22-4, 13-0) used a 27-0 run in the first half to pull away from Lipscomb (3-23, 1-12) in an 80-46 win Tuesday in the Curb Event Center on the campus of Belmont University.

In doing so, the Eagles clinched at least a share of the program's ninth ASUN regular season championship. They can secure it outright along with the No. 1 seed in the ASUN Championship with a win at home against Kennesaw State on Saturday.

"We really picked up the defensive intensity in the second quarter, and it allowed us to go on a nice run," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said.

Lipscomb led 15-11 with 3:09 left in the opening quarter, but Chandler Ryan's (Groveland, Ill./Morton HS) 3-pointer spurred a 27-0 run that gave the Eagles a 38-15 lead with 2:08 left in the half. In all, FGCU's defense held the Bisons scoreless for an 11:29 stretch.

In the second quarter alone, Lipscomb finished 1-for-7 from the field with nine turnovers while being outscored 26-4 by the Green and Blue. Offensively, the Eagles had more made field goals (8) from seven different players than the Bisons had attempts in those 10 minutes. Along with a nine-point third quarter, FGCU has now produced 18 single-digit quarters defensively in ASUN play this year.

The outcome ran FGCU's winning streak to 13 straight, which is tied with Stephen F. Austin for the fourth-longest streak in the nation. It is also tied for the 10th-longest streak in program history.

After experiencing the program's worst two-game stretch in terms of 3-point field goal percentage (9-for-64, .141) of the Division-I era, FGCU made 15-for-49 (.306) from long range against Lipscomb. Nasrin Ulel (5-for-9) led eight different players to make at least one, while a trio of others made two apiece.

Destiny Washington (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North HS) tallied a game-high 17 points while adding eight rebounds and a game-high four blocks. She finished 5-for-9 from the field, including a 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter that gave her 1,000 points in her NCAA career. She became just the second player to join the 1,000 point, 600 rebound, 100 steal, 100 block and 100 assist club while wearing the Green and Blue (Whitney Knight).

Ulel (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta HS) added 15 points, five rebounds and two assists. Tytionia Adderly (Jupiter, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) and Keri Jewett-Giles (Fort Myers, Fla./Dunbar HS) each had a game-high four assists, while Kerstie Phills (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian HS) had nine points and a season-high nine rebounds off the bench.

Overall, FGCU outscored Lipscomb 32-3 in points off turnovers and 15-2 in second chance points.

The Green and Blue, who are now 25-0 all-time against Lipscomb, have won 20 straight and 25 of the past 26 ASUN regular season games dating back to last season. They need three more wins to clinch the program's ninth-straight 25-win season.

Notes
Due to a power outage at Lipscomb University's Allen Arena, the game was moved to Belmont's Curb Event Center. It was the first time the Eagles have played in that arena since a 57-50 win over Belmont on Jan. 12, 2012.

FGCU is one of just eight teams across 32 NCAA Division-I conferences to have an undefeated slate in league play. Here's the full group:

UConn - American Athletic Conference

COACH SMESKO
FGCU head coach Karl Smesko led the 2017-18 Eagles to another historic season. The Green and Blue finished 31-5 overall and 13-1 in ASUN play, capturing the program's eighth ASUN regular season championship and fifth ASUN tournament championship. The team finished the season ranked 25th in the final USA Today Coaches Poll, recaptured the NCAA record for most 3-point field goals made in a season with 431 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in seven seasons, where the Eagles knocked off 5th-seeded and No. 15 ranked Missouri in the opening round. It was the team's second tournament win over the past three appearances. Over the course of the season, FGCU knocked off three ranked teams - No. 15 Missouri, No. 20 Kentucky and No. 21 DePaul.

Over the past four seasons, Smesko has guided FGCU to three 30 plus win seasons while recording a 121-23 (.840) record overall. The now eight-time ASUN Coach of the Year rallied the 2016-17 team to its seventh straight 25-win campaign, culminating in an ASUN tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2015-16, he was named the espnW mid-major coach of the year following a run that witnessed the Eagles claim a WNIT runner-up finish and a Division-I program best ever 33-6 record. In 2014-15, the team achieved its first-ever top-25 ranking and made another trip to the NCAA Tournament, where the Eagles earned a No. 7 seed and won the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament game, toppling No. 10 seed Oklahoma State.

Smesko has guided the Eagles to 15-straight 20-win seasons (including 2018-19) and eight-straight 25-win seasons. He maintains a record of 518-118 (.814) overall in his career, including a 183-16 (.920) mark in ASUN play. Over the past seven + seasons, he has guided FGCU to a 121-4 (.968) record in conference play with four undefeated seasons. Smesko earned his 400th career coaching win in 2014-15 in just 493 career games, two games faster than UConn's Geno Auriemma. Entering 2018-19, he ranked among an elite list of just four active Division I coaches with a career win percentage of .800 or higher, joining Auriemma, Baylor's Kim Mulkey and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer in the esteemed group. Over the past year, first-year NCAA Division-I head coaches Nancy Fahey (Illinois) and Bart Brooks (Belmont) pushed the list to six.
