Balanced Scoring Helps @FGCU_WBB Secure 12th-Straight In 73-40 Win At Stetson

DELAND, Fla. - A balanced scoring effort helped the FGCU women's basketball team (21-4, 12-0 ASUN) secure its 12th-straight victory with a 73-40 win over Stetson (13-12, 8-3) on the road today in the Edmunds Center.

"We had a great defensive effort in the first half," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said of his team, which also won its 19th-straight and 25th of the past 26 in ASUN play dating back to last year. "We did a good job on the boards and got offensive production from a lot of players, including several off the bench."

Along with Liberty's win over North Alabama, FGCU's victory means the Eagles can clinch at least a share of the ASUN regular season title with a win on the road at Lipscomb Tuesday.

Nasrin Ulel and Lisa Zderadicka each scored 11 points, while Destiny Washington and Kerstie Phills each chipped in 10. Tytionia Adderly led all players with 10 rebounds.

The Eagles, who never trailed, led from the moment Keri Jewett-Giles scored four straight to open the game. Later, Chandler Ryan scored six straight and Jewett-Giles (Fort Myers, Fla./Dunbar HS) added two free throws to cap a 13-0 run that gave the Eagles a 19-4 lead with less than a minute left in the quarter.

Then, the Green and Blue went on an 11-0 run over the half's final 4:48 to take a 42-18 lead into the break. Ulel (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta HS) scored eight points in the second quarter alone, including four during the late run.

The margin grew to as many as 31 in the early stages of the second half, but Stetson went on a 16-5 run, including nine straight to close the quarter as the Eagles scored just two points - on a layup from Washington (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North HS) - over the final 5:15.

Ulel and Ryan (Groveland, Ill./Morton HS) started to breathe some life into the offense in the first three minutes of the fourth with a pair of 3-point field goals. Phills (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian HS) then scored six straight, and Adderly (Jupiter, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) added a 3-pointer. Tyra Cox (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) scored on a layup with 1:47 left to give FGCU its largest lead, 35.

Defensively, FGCU held Stetson to single-digit points in the first (7) and fourth (4) quarters to increase its number of such quarters to 16 in ASUN play. The Hatters finished just 2-for-16 from 3-point range, while the Eagles bench outscored Stetson 28-0.

Washington is now 17 points away from 1,000 in her NCAA career, which has seen stops at Loyola-Chicago and Ball State. Should she join the group, she will also become just the second player to wear the Green and Blue to join the 1,000 point, 600 rebound, 100 block, 100 steal and 100 assists club along with Whitney Knight.

The victory, which also snapped a six-game winning streak for Stetson, allows FGCU to remain as one of just 10 teams nationally with an undefeated conference slate:

UConn - American Athletic Conference
NC A&T - MEAC
FGCU - ASUN
Baylor - Big 12 Conference
Oregon - Pac-12
Mercer - Southern
Stephen F. Austin - Southland
Rice - Conference USA
Penn - Ivy League
Quinnipiac - MAAC

FGCU is now just four wins away from its ninth-straight season with at least 25 wins.

The Green and Blue's 12-game winning streak is tied for the sixth-longest in the nation behind Oregon (17), Rice (15), Baylor (14), Stephen F. Austin (13) and Quinnipiac (13). American also has 12 straight. They also moved into sole possession of the seventh-longest regular season winning streak in program history:

45 games – 12/29/05 to 03/03/07
23 games – 12/06/14 to 11/13/15
22 games – 12/28/12 to 11/20/13
20 games – 12/29/11 to 11/14/12
19 games – 12/20/15 to 02/27/16
17 games – 01/10/09 to 11/13/09
12 games - 01/05/19 to present

FGCU is now 24-4 all-time against Stetson dating back to Jan. 12, 2008. The Eagles have won 13 of the past 14 in the series, and they're 11-2 all-time in DeLand. Saturday's victory was the second-largest winning margin in the history of the series - behind last year's 80-40 win on Jan. 6 in Fort Myers.

COACH SMESKO
FGCU head coach Karl Smesko led the 2017-18 Eagles to another historic season. The Green and Blue finished 31-5 overall and 13-1 in ASUN play, capturing the program's eighth ASUN regular season championship and fifth ASUN tournament championship. The team finished the season ranked 25th in the final USA Today Coaches Poll, recaptured the NCAA record for most 3-point field goals made in a season with 431 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in seven seasons, where the Eagles knocked off 5th-seeded and No. 15 ranked Missouri in the opening round. It was the team's second tournament win over the past three appearances. Over the course of the season, FGCU knocked off three ranked teams - No. 15 Missouri, No. 20 Kentucky and No. 21 DePaul.

Over the past four seasons, Smesko has guided FGCU to three 30 plus win seasons while recording a 121-23 (.840) record overall. The now eight-time ASUN Coach of the Year rallied the 2016-17 team to its seventh straight 25-win campaign, culminating in an ASUN tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2015-16, he was named the espnW mid-major coach of the year following a run that witnessed the Eagles claim a WNIT runner-up finish and a Division-I program best ever 33-6 record. In 2014-15, the team achieved its first-ever top-25 ranking and made another trip to the NCAA Tournament, where the Eagles earned a No. 7 seed and won the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament game, toppling No. 10 seed Oklahoma State.

Including the 2017-18 campaign, Smesko has guided the Eagles to 14-straight 20-win seasons and eight-straight 25-win seasons. He maintains a record of 517-118 (.814) overall in his career, including a 182-16 (.919) mark in ASUN play. Over the past seven + seasons, he has guided FGCU to a 120-4 (.968) record in conference play with four undefeated seasons. Smesko earned his 400th career coaching win in 2014-15 in just 493 career games, two games faster than UConn's Geno Auriemma. Entering 2018-19, he ranked among an elite list of just four active Division I coaches with a career win percentage of .800 or higher, joining Auriemma, Baylor's Kim Mulkey and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer in the esteemed group. Over the past year, first-year NCAA Division-I head coaches Nancy Fahey (Illinois) and Bart Brooks (Belmont) pushed the list to six.
