Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Meg Ellis (@realmegellis)

@FGCU_WSoccer downs NJIT on senior day, overtakes first place in league standings

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women's soccer team (9-3-1, 4-0-1 ASUN) claimed a 2-0 senior day victory over NJIT (8-6-0, 2-3-0 ASUN) Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The Eagles now stand at the top of the ASUN standings and are the only team undefeated in conference play.

"This is a great result for us, we knew that today was going to be really challenging," head coach Jim Blankenship said. "NJIT was one of a handful of undefeated teams in the conference, but I'm really happy with the pressure we put on them. We had two great goals and a really solid defensive performance. It was overall a great game for us and we put together a complete performance."

For the fourth consecutive match, the Eagles found the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes of play. Redshirt-junior Megan Young was the first to get the home team on the board, converting a pass from sophomore Kara Kyramarios just 13 minutes into the game. Young's (White Lake, MI/Walled Lake Northern HS) goal was her first of the season and the second of her career.

Freshman Louise Lillback (Stockholm, Sweden/Tibble Gymnasium) extended the team's lead with less than six minutes to go in the first stanza, knocking in the seventh goal of her rookie campaign. Seniors Evdokia Popadinova and Marjorie Boilesen were each credited with an assist as the team jumped out 2-0 over NJIT.

FGCU limited the visiting Highlanders to just one shot in the first half, taking its 2-0 advantage into the break.

The Eagles' defense prevented senior keeper Melissa Weck from being tested until the 58th minute of the match, when NJIT's Katrina Nguyen-DeMary tallied the team's first on-frame attempt. Weck (Yorba Linda, CA/Esperanza HS) went on to make just two more saves as she cruised to her sixth solo shutout of the season.

FGCU had a few more chances to score, one of which was a bicycle kick off the foot of senior Lindsey Patton that the NJIT keeper just barely corralled. Kyramarios (Titusville, FL/Titusville HS), Popadinova (Hadzhidimovo, Bulgaria/Northwestern Ohio) and junior Hope Van Wagner (Avon, IN/Avon HS) also notched on-frame attempts in the final minutes of play, but the team ultimately held on to its original lead for the victory.

With the win, the Eagles extend their unbeaten streak to eight matches. The team has not lost since Sept. 12 and has outscored opponents 15-3 during the stretch.

COACH JIM BLANKENSHIP
A veteran of over two decades in collegiate coaching, head coach Jim Blankenship, who was named the ASUN Coach of the Year in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, has built FGCU women's soccer into a yearly contender in the ASUN Conference and a rising program in the South Region in just 12 seasons. Blankenship started the program in 2007 and has since guided the Eagles to 11 double-digit win seasons, culminating with ASUN Regular Season Championships in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017. In 2011 and 2012 he also led the Eagles to back-to-back ASUN Tournament titles as they became the first team in the history of the university to make it to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles went on to win the 2014 ASUN Tournament and hosted the first NCAA Championship event on campus. The Eagles earned their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance with the 2015 ASUN Tournament Championship and won their first NCAA game at USF in 2015 while finishing 24th in the nation. In 2016, the Eagles made it three-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament with a third-straight ASUN Tournament title. A year later, the Eagles became the first ASUN women's soccer program to make four-straight NCAA Tournaments with another tournament title in 2017. Blankenship has guided FGCU to a 165-58-24 (.715) overall record through the first 12 seasons of the program's existence, including an 80-14-15 (.803) mark in the ASUN. Blankenship's impressive career record of 405-128-35 (.744) over 26 seasons has come while leading FGCU, the University of Miami, Lynn University and St. Thomas University.
