DELAND, FL – The FGCU women's tennis team began fall play at the Stetson Invitational Friday and concluded Saturday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
The Eagles displayed dominance throughout the entire two-day event as they claimed a victory in each of their singles matches while also turning in stellar performances in doubles play.
On day one, Barry University (BU) got the best of the Green and Blue in doubles competition but the Eagles were able to put that aside and quickly bounced back against Stetson later on that day. In strong fashion, FGCU captured three of four doubles matches against the Hatters, claiming victories on courts two, three and four.
FGCU ended day one in singles action, coming out on top in each of the seven flights against Saint Leo (SLU) with only one match going into a tiebreaker.
Transitioning into day two, each of the 1-3 flights against SLU went into a tiebreaker as the Eagles eventually snagged each match while
Sofia Perez (Alajuela, Costa Rica/Florida Virtual School) teamed up with
Patricia Villar (Logrono, Spain/Bachillerato Santa Maria/Louisiana Monroe) to produce a 6-3 win.
The dominant effort continued into singles play against BU highlighted by three straight set-victories as Perez (3-6, 6-2 (10-8)) and
Sara Kelly (
Naples, Fla./Florida Virtual School) (6-3, 1-6 (11-9)) rallied to win.
FGCU continues its fall play on Oct. 12-14 when the team travels to Miami, FL for the Bedford Cup.
