FORT MYERS, FL – Shak Adams opened the scoring for FGCU (3-2-1) in the 60th minute but a goal from Cal State Fullerton (2-2-4) with 20 seconds remaining before the end the regulation would lead to a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of action at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
"I think you're not being honest as a player or a coach if you're not disappointed," said head coach
Jesse Cormier. "We were in a great position to get the three points at home but the game is a very honest experience and we didn't do enough on the night. Tonight was a little step backward for us but I think it was good for the guys to understand when we do play with a high pace and the tempo is fast, we're doing our thing and the fans are on the edge of their seats. So there's a lot to take out of the game tonight and through our experience from the non-conference games to prepare us going into the ASUN portion."
After a tight-contested first half in which a combined seven shots were fired,
Adams (Antioch, Tenn./Cane Ridge HS) broke the scoring with his fourth goal in as many games to give FGCU a 1-0 lead after 60 minutes. The result stood firm all the way up until the last remaining ticks before Cal State Fullerton scored on a double-header assist as both squads could not find the back of the net after an extra 20 minutes.
Keeper
Gustavo Vasconcelos (Recife, Brazil/Colegio GGE) was put on his toes early just two minutes into the match coming up with his first save. His next test wouldn't arrive until the 33rd minute as he snagged his second of the period. Possession went back-and-forth between the Eagles and the Titans in the first has as Fullerton edged FGCU 4-3 in shots after 45 minutes with each team recording a pair of corner kicks.
Following the break, the Eagles offense finally broke through after 15 minutes.
O'Vonte Mullings (Toronto, Ontario/ Northview Heights Secondary) collected a loose ball from 30-yards out, finding Adams to his left who shook off two defenders inside the five-yard box and fired a shot to the far post for the 1-0 lead. It was the junior's fourth goal of the season.
The Titans pressed numbers up top, shooting six shots over the next 30 minutes until their seventh one with 20 seconds before the final whistle fell through. Off a header pass, Donovan Wilson tallied the equalizer, sending the Eagles into their first overtime minutes of the season.
Heading into overtime, the Eagles connected on two shots apiece in each period as both teams would draw to a 1-1 final after 110 minutes.
Vasconcelos ends the match with five saves, moving to 2-1-1 this season.
