JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The #27 FGCU baseball team suffered a pair of losses Saturday to Jacksonville. The Eagles (25-9, 3-3 ASUN) lost the first contest 15-5 in seven innings before dropping the second to the Dolphins (24-13, 6-3 ASUN) 5-1.
"Today was disappointing," said head coach
Dave Tollett. "There's no other way to put it. We didn't come ready to play and Jacksonville took advantage. We need to have short memories because we have another tough game Wednesday against the Hurricanes."
GAME ONE: #27 FGCU 5, JU 15 (7 INNINGS)
FGCU threatened in each of the first four innings, but only scratched across one run in that time. The home side, however, scored three runs on three hits in the third before breaking the game open in the fourth to lead 9-1 after four.
Another run in the sixth for JU made it 10-1 before the Eagles cut into the lead in the seventh.
Christin Proffitt (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida Baker HS) walked to begin the inning before a
Gage Morey (West Palm Beach, Fla./PB Central HS) double brought runners to second and third with nobody out.
Alex Brait (Viera, Fla./Viera HS) then brought in the first run of the inning with a single to left before
Richie Garcia (Davie, Fla./West Broward HS) plated Morey with a single to center.
With two runs already in,
Kohl Gilmore (Fort Pierce, Fla./John Carroll HS/Indian River State) scored two more on a single to right to cut the deficit to 10-5.
That would be as close as the Eagles would get, however, as the Dolphins scored five runs in the seventh to complete the win.
Josh Dye (DeLand, Fla./DeLand HS) was hit with the loss and falls to 5-2 on the year. Gilmore, Garcia, and Brait all finished with two hits.
GAME TWO: #27 FGCU 1, JU 5
The Eagles grabbed an early lead against the Dolphins in game two courtesy of a Gilmore sacrifice fly.
FGCU held that lead until the second when JU tied the game on three singles, though
Evan Lumbert (Orlando, Fla./Boone HS/South Florida State) limited the damage and stranded two more runners after leaving a pair on the bases in the first.
The Dolphins then plated three runs in the third to grab a 4-1 lead and tallied another in the fourth to make it 5-1.
FGCU threatened in the fifth on a walk and a single to right by
Eric Gonzalez (Miami, Fla./American Senior HS/ASA College), but both runners were stranded when the inning came to an end.
The Eagles loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth but were unable to get the crucial hit to extend the ballgame.
Lumbert (4-2) suffered the loss, surrendering five runs on eight hits.
Justin Gill (Winter Haven, Fla.Lake Region HS/Polk State) worked the final 4.2 innings, allowing three hits in that time.
