JACKSON, Miss. – The win streak continued for the FGCU baseball (21-5) as the Eagles picked up their eighth-straight win with a 9-4 win over Jackson State (17-9) Saturday. Led by
Josh Dye (DeLand, Fla/DeLand HS) who earned his fifth win of the season, the Green and Blue cruised to yet another series win.
"This was a big win for us,"
Dave Tollett. "Our bats to continue to shine and Josh did what Josh does on the mound. He gave us another really good start and we have put together a nice little streak here. We know sweeps are tough so we are going to need to be ready to play tomorrow and hopefully, we can continue this ride.
Both teams started the game by scoring two runs in the first inning. The Eagles scored their runs on an RBI hit from
Richie Garcia (Davie, Fla./West Broward HS) and an RBI double off the bat of
Alex Brait (Viera, Fla./Viera HS)
After Jackson State tied the game at 2-2, FGCU regained a two-run lead when
Marc Coffers (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) and
Kohl Gilmore (Fort Pierce, Fla./John Carroll HS/Indian River State) drove in runs in the second and third to make it 4-2. Jackson State got one back, but FGCU answered with another run in the fifth on an RBI double from
Eric Gonzalez (Miami, Fla./American Senior HS/ASA College) to make it 5-3.
The score would remain the same until the seventh when
Eli Lovell (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southwest HS/Kansas City Kansas College) singled home Garcia to make it 6-3. Just a few batters later,
Christian Proffitt (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida Baker HS) brought in two on an RBI single to give FGCU a five-run lead.
After Jackson State plated a run in the eighth,
Sebastian Gruszecki (Dudley, Mass./Shepherd Hill Regional HS) took over with two outs in the eighth and Proffitt would come through again in the ninth with another RBI single. The 9-4 lead would be more than enough and FGCU would go on to seal the win.
The Eagles tallied 18 hits in the game, led by Brait with four and Proffitt with three. Three other players had two hits.
