FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team (27-7, 2-1 ASUN) came away with two of three wins this weekend over Stetson (21-12, 1-2 ASUN) falling 3-0 in game three Sunday afternoon.
"Great job by Perkins, Smith, and the entire Stetson team today," said head coach
David Deiros. "They came back after two tough losses yesterday and just stifled us today. We have the consolation that we won the series, but we have work to do before we leave for South Carolina on Thursday morning."
A closely contested ball game after two innings, Stetson opened up the scoring with a two-run home run from Ashly Smith in the third. It remained a 2-0 contest before the Hatters tacked on another run in their top half of the seventh en route to the 3-0 final.
In the top of the third, the Hatters had a runner on first with two outs as Smith came through with a home run near the right-field foul pole for the 2-0 lead.
Kelsey Huff (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Dwyer HS) Â would record the Eagle's only hit in the next half as the bats remained quiet the rest of the way, stranding three on the bags in total.
Stetson added a solo home run from Maggie Fritz in the top of the seventh, as Tori Perkins tossed her complete game using 72 pitches.
Taylor Bauman (Jacksonville, Fla./Atlantic Coast HS) gets tagged with the loss (2-2) in her first start of the season, while
Riley Randolph (St. Petersburg, Fla./Northeast HS) tossed two innings of relief.
