@FGCU_Softball Sweeps Day Two, Moves on to 12-0

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Softball team (12-0) added two more to the win column tonight as the Eagles swept day two of the Four Points by Sheraton Invitational. In game one, FGCU claimed a 6-0 victory over Wright State (0-9) and ended the night cap with a thrilling 1-0 triumph over Southern Illinois (7-5).

"Two really good performances in the circle today," said head coach David Deiros. "Marissa tossed a complete game to get the job done and Riley really stepped up after giving up a hard hit in the first. It was a fun game on both sides with good defense and both teams played really well. It was just a matter of who was going to get a break and we got one in the bottom of the sixth. Congratulations to us, we're still undefeated and tomorrow we will go out to try to win the tournament."

FGCU jumped on the board first against the visiting Raiders, scoring four runs in the first, highlighted by a two-run RBI double down the right field line from Farley Callaghan (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS).

Game two provided a pitching duel between Riley Randolph (St. Petersburg, Fla./Northeast HS) and SIU's  Savanna Dover. FGCU was held hitless until the fourth frame and loaded the bases two innings later as Brooke Clemens (West Rotunda, Fla./Lemon Bay HS/Florida) provided the heroics.

GAME ONE: FGCU 6, WRIGHT STATE 0
The Eagles' offense wasted no time in the first posting a four-run, three-hit inning to go up 4-0. After Fournet singled up the middle to bring in the game's first run, two batters later, Ashley Swiderski (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) produced the same result, this time to right field. Shortly after with two on and two away, Callaghan roped a liner that fell just inside the right field line driving two runs in as FGCU claimed a 4-0 advantage.

Fournet would add on to her RBI total in the fourth finding the middle of the diamond once again, and after coming in the clutch last night with an RBI pinch-hit, Bri Bennett (Jacksonville, Fla./Mandarin HS/Lake Sumter) was called on once again, this time delivering on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to cap off the scoring for FGCU in the 6-0 win.

In the circle, Marissa Mesiemore (Bushnell, Fla./South Sumter HS) battled off a shaky first inning and would not allow a hit the rest of the way. In her first complete outing of the season, the newcomer scattered just three hits – all in the first inning – while recording one strikeout. With the win, Mesiemore now moves to 6-0 on the year.

FGCU totaled eight hits on offense as Fournet and Callaghan led the squad with two RBI apiece.

GAME TWO: FGCU 1, SIU 0
The visiting side threatened in the bottom of the first putting runners on the corners but Randolph would escape the jam with a strikeout and a grounder to short.

The FGCU offense struggled to get things going early on, and were held hitless until the fourth as Fournet's single found center field. It wasn't until the sixth where the Green and Blue started clicking. By way of three infield singles, FGCU loaded the bases and with one out, Clemens' grounder to short forced the second baseman to find the out at second which allowed Kate Kelly (Cape Coral, Fla./North Ft. Myers/Seminole State) – who led the inning off with one of the three aforementioned infield base hits – to come across the plate for the score.

After scattering two hits in the opening frame, Randolph (5-0) kept the Salukis at bay, allowing none the rest of the way, fanning four batters as the junior retired the side in the seventh to seal the 1-0 triumph.
