White’s Stellar Performance Leads @FGCU_Softball Past Georgetown

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Behind 6.1 perfect innings from Morgan White in the circle and a three-run first, the FGCU softball team took down the visiting Georgetown Hoyas in a 4-2 contest Saturday evening in day three of the FGCU Kickoff Classic.

"It was a masterful performance by Morgan White; she did a fantastic job limiting Georgetown to one hit," said head coach David Deiros. "Once we lost the no-hitter it was time for Taylor Bauman to come in and shut the door and she did a great job. Congratulations to our team, we're 3-0 and let's see if we can win the tournament tomorrow."

LuLu Newmark's (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Bowling Green/American Heritage HS) two-run RBI single in the bottom half of the first helped the Eagles jump out in front 3-0, capitalizing on three errors by the visitors. Ashley Swiderski (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) made it a 4-0 ballgame with a solo shot in the fifth – her first of the year – as Bauman (Jacksonville, Fla./Atlantic Coast HS) shut the door on the Hoyas' rally attempt in the seventh to secure her third straight save.

Facing two outs in the bottom half of the first, Racquel Fournet (Windermere, Fla./Windermere Preparatory HS) singled up the middle and raced around to second on a fielding error in center. Staring down at a full count, Brooke Clemens (West Rotunda, Fla./Lemon Bay HS/Florida) reached on a fielder's choice, and advanced on an errant throw, which brought Fournet across the plate.

After Brittany McGuire (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) reached on an error and stole second, Newmark was down to her last strike. The senior proceeded to drive a liner to left field pushing two runs across the plate. In the fifth, the Eagles made it a 4-0 contest when Swiderski launched a home run to left center.

Meanwhile, White (Ocala, Fla./Forest HS) kept the Hoyas at bay, not allowing a walk or hit through six innings of work. The streak would snap in the final frame after Georgetown reached on fielding error with one out in the sixth. The no-hit bid then came to an end with a two-run home run with two outs in the inning.

White exited to a standing ovation and greeted by her teammates and coaches as she went back into the dugout.  Bauman would come in and collect the one-out save to secure the Eagles' victory.

Fournet led the Eagles with three hits at the plate and in the circle, White earns her first win of the season.

FGCU will cap off the tournament, squaring up against Ball State in the last game Sunday at 1:45 p.m.
