@FGCU_WTen Caps Off Weekend at Bedford Cup; Claims Sportsmanship Award

MIAMI – The FGCU women's tennis team concluded its weekend in Miami competing at the Bedford Cup, highlighted by Bridget Forster winning the singles trophy on court No. 3 Sunday afternoon as the Green and Blue garnered the sportsmanship trophy. 

FGCU kicked off the three-day tournament Friday morning and by the end of the day, the Eagles walked away with 12 total wins with nine victories coming in singles action followed by three wins in the doubles competition.

Maja Ornberg (Ornberg (Kil, Sweden/De la Gardiegymnasiet, Lidkoping), Sofia Perez (Alajuela, Costa Rica/Florida Virtual School) and Patricia Villar (Logrono, Spain/Bachillerato Santa Maria/Louisiana Monroe) each collected two wins apiece on day one. Meanwhile, in doubles play, Ornberg teamed up with Julia Ascúa (Santa Fe, Argentina/Domingo G. Silva) to claim a 6-3 win as Ariana Chan (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Internacional Pert) and Madison Gallegos (Denver, Colo./Colorado Connections Academy) captured a 6-4 victory. Forster (Boca Raton, Fla./Florida Virtual School) and Villar worked together to claim the final doubles win for the Green and Blue, a 7-5 triumph.

At the conclusion of the second day of competition in Miami, FGCU racked up four wins in singles play as Ascúa picked up two victories defeating Alexandria Mjos (USF) in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 10-7) followed by a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Miami's Daniella Roldan. Forster, who did falter on day one, snagged a 6-3, 6-2 win over Villar to head into day three undefeated in singles.

The final day of the Bedford Cup was highlighted by a couple of wins over ASUN opponents as Ascúa and Forster both came out victorious Sunday afternoon. Ascúa took down UNF's Constanza Gorches in straight sets (6-2, 6-0) while Forster, rallying from behind, claimed the No. 3 singles draw trophy over Stetson's Alexe Viaud. After dropping the first set 4-6; the Boca Raton native dominated in set two, claiming it 6-1 as she won the tiebreaker 10-6, garnering the weekend trophy on court No. 3.

In addition, with so many Eagles being nominated by the opposing teams in the field, the committee awarded the entire FGCU team with the Bedford Cup Sportsmanship trophy.

FGCU will continue its fall action in the ITA Regionals this Thursday, Oct. 18 through Sunday, Oct. 21 in Atlanta, Ga.

HEAD COACH COURTNEY VERNON
FGCU's women's tennis team is led by three-time ASUN Coach of the Year Courtney Vernon, who in her fifth season saw the Eagles claim their second-straight ASUN regular season crown. She has mentored her student-athletes into earning 56 ASUN All-Conference and All-Academic honors, including the 2014, 2016 and 2017 ASUN Freshman of the Year as well as the 2016 and 2017 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the 2018 Player of the Year. Vernon has led the Green and Blue to a 61-42 overall record (.586) and 27-5 conference record (.827) in her five years at FGCU.
