Lutzow, Smith, Parks & Doyle Named @FGCUEagles Scholar-Athletes Of The Month

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Department of Athletics has announced its monthly academic honorees for October and November. Women's cross country's Carley Lutzow and men's golf's Doug Smith were named the Scholar-Athletes of the Month for October, while women's soccer's Ashley Parks and men's basketball's Ricky Doyle earned the honor for November.

Each month during the school year, the FGCU Athletics Communication Office and Athletic Academic staff will choose a pair of Eagles – one male and one female – as the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athletes of the Month. Those selected for the honor will have exhibited a combination of superior athletic and overall academic success.

Lutzow (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere HS), an ASUN First-Team honoree, currently carries a 3.55 GPA while majoring in Exercise Science. Her success this year has been highlighted recently as she broke her personal best in the 6K at the NCAA Regionals in early November. The Illinois-native clocked in with a time of 21:14.9. Lutzow finished 5th of all ASUN competitors and 48th overall while finishing a remarkable 61 places ahead of her 2016 race.

Smith (Windermere, Fla./Olympia HS) is a business finance major holding a GPA of 3.41. The 2016 ASUN All-Freshman Team member showcased a solid performance in the early fall season. Smith finished the Homewood/Hilton Garden Airport & FGCU Classic with a final-round 77, which was the best by any FGCU member and tied for the fifth-best round of the day in the 68-player field as he finished tied for 11th overall. Smith currently has a 15.9 scoring average through 10 fall rounds, including two par-or-better rounds.

Parks (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette HS) became FGCU's fifth women's soccer honoree to take home CoSIDA District 4 Academic First Team. The redshirt-senior carries a perfect 4.00 GPA in her master's program of Accounting and Taxation after graduating last spring with a 3.48 undergraduate GPA. A crucial piece of FGCU's backline, Parks was named ASUN's Defensive Player of the Year and was an ASUN First Team and All-Academic selection. With Parks in the back, the Eagles held opponents to 14 goals this season through 19 matches. The Missouri-native is also eligible for the 2017 All-America Team ballot, where first, second and third team Academic All-America honorees will be selected in early December.

Doyle (Cape Coral, Fla./Michigan/Bishop Verot HS) boasts a 3.26 GPA while pursuing a bachelors in Communications. The University of Michigan transfer joins the Eagle program with an immediate impact on the early season. Doyle has started all eight games and is averaging 7.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He scored a season high 11 points at Bowling Green and secured a career-best 11 rebounds at Siena.
