@FGCU_WTEN Clinches Dramatic 4-3 Win Against UTEP, Snaps Miners' Four-Match Win Streak

FORT MYERS, Fla. – With her back against the wall and the match on the line, freshman Joselyn Treyes Albarracin mounted a dramatic comeback and helped the FGCU women's tennis team (5-5) snap UTEP's (7-6) four-match win streak and clinch a 4-3 win against the Miners at the FGCU Tennis Complex Wednesday afternoon.

With the match tied, 3-3, Treyes Albarracin (Guayaquil, Ecuador/InterAmerican Academy) dropped the first set to UTEP's Lois Wagenvoort and trailed 2-5 in the second set. However, the Ecuador native won five straight games to take the second set and registered a 7-5 win in the decisive third set to clinch the match for FGCU out of the No. 2 position.

"The girls found a way to win today," said FGCU head coach Courtney Vernon. "I'm proud of the way they fought, particularly Joselyn. She was a point away from losing the match but fought hard and showed a lot of courage to earn the win."

The Eagles made quick work of the Miners in doubles competition as they registered wins in all three matches. Breana Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago/St. Jospeh's Convent) and Treyes Albarracin defeated UTEP's top tandem of Duda Santos and Vivienne Kuliche, 6-1, before Julia Ascua (Santa Fe, Argentina/Domingo G. Silva) and Julianna Curtis (Tampa, Fla./Allendale Academy) notched a 6-3 win against Daphne Visscher and Wagenvoort to improve to 5-1 in doubles competition and claim the point for FGCU. Additionally, Laura Falceto Font (Zaragoza, Spain/El Pilar Maristas Zaragoza) and Elizabeth Means (Washington, D.C./Wiregrass Ranch HS) cleaned up the Miners' duo of Maltida Tench and Raven Bennett, 6-4.

FGCU fell behind to UTEP, 2-1, after dropping the first two matches of singles competition, but quickly reclaimed the lead, 3-2, after winning two straight matches of their own. In the No. 4 position, Means was defeated by Visscher (6-0, 6-1) while Stampfli lost to Kulicke, who is ranked by the ITA as the No. 119 singles player in the country, by the same score. FGCU then rebounded as Falceto Font notched her fourth win of the season by defeating Medina (6-2, 6-0) in the No. 6 position and Curtis won her fourth consecutive singles match with a win against Tench (6-2, 6-4) in No. 5 singles. UTEP evened the score, 3-3, after Santos defeated Ascua (6-3, 6-3) in the No. 3 position, but Treyes Albarracin then clinched the match in dramatic fashion as mentioned above.
